A well-beveragèd employee is a happy employee

Last night in my Stephen M. Ross Business School of Business and Hey This Guy Ross Gave Us A Crapload Of Money class, we were talking about employee satisfaction, morale and rewards. Some of the things in our reading were just embarassingly stupid, like suggesting that you should go to clown college because people like managers with a sense of humour (CLOWNS ARE NOT FUNNY) or give out buttons that say "Caught caring!" when an employee does something thoughtful. I wanted to throw up because it seems so forced - like David Brent trying too hard to be the cool, funny, likable boss and coming off as pathetic and sad.

My boss brings milk to work for his coffee and shares it with all of his employees. Right off the bat when you work here, he informs you that he brings milk to work and that you can have some.

So I do. I have for the past year and a half - to the point where I've started to take it for granted. I'd forgotten that I've never been able to drink tea with milk at work at any other job, because bringing my own milk means that I would have to work through a half-gallon of milk before it goes bad, usually while only working there (and therefore drinking there) part-time.

Anyway, this is my little salute to my boss for one of the little things that count. Being able to drink tea with milk at work makes me happy. I can drink tea without milk, but milk is a little luxury that makes my workday happier.

What does your boss do that makes you happy?

okay, so I am bossless now, but at my last "real job" (as in, not a job I took for a couple months to make enough money to come back to France), my boss allowed me to come in at any time I wanted, as long as I did my job. So I got in at 11, left at 7, allowing me to avoid all traffic whatsoever (great when your commute is an hour and fifteen minutes without traffic, and three hours with).

My agent is sort of my boss so hmmm. She makes me happy when she tells me to go on vacation to get inspiration for my writing. The trip's on her. Yahoo! Of course that only happened once and hasn't happened since. Bummer.

They actually said to give out those silly buttons? That's so freaking lame. Hmm, it's a good thing I never did do a dual MSI/MBA.

And just think, we've got the #1 b-school in the country.

Well, I have to admit the whole button thing was in the lame-ass reading we had to do and wasn't actually mentioned in class.

This isn't my boss, but my work has all sorts of beverages (soda, juice, tea, milk, and coffee) to have whenever. Mike...don't start whining that my life is so much better than yours :-p

Being that me and Cari work at the same place, the free soda/juice thing is really cool but I don't actually come into the office so I don't get that benefit. I wonder if they'll deliver some free diet pepsi to my apartment? They did just move to a building that's across the street from my apartment. Hmmmm. Somehow, I don't think they're going to be doing that for a lame intern like me! ;)

At my old company we had 35 cent coke machines, fancy teas (meaning something other than black--although I prefer black tea) and hot chocolate (both regular and sugar free).

My boss used to have "flex" hours too, as long as we got our stuff done.

But other than those perks, the job really sucked.

My boss and I share a computer so she's never around when I am. I enjoy her company but it's also nice to work without supervision. Sometimes I come into work on a day off just to say hi to her and catch up.
