'Hey, 98.6, it's good to have you back again...'

Dear WJIM 97.5,

Suck it.

I don't know what I mean by "it," but I do strongly insist that you suck it immediately.

Once upon a time, you were an oldies station - and an oldies station that played a better mix of music than WOMC, now the only oldies station within range of Ann Arbor. (You also had the advantage of not having Tom Ryan on staff, so I could listen to you during the drive-time hours without wanting to punch the radio controls.)

Now you have become a cookie-cutter "Contemporary Hits" station, just like every other station on the fucking radio. I am so sick of this. I don't want a world where I can hear the same Coldplay song playing at the same time as I scan through the radio dial. I want to hear The Association and The Beatles and Carly Simon and Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley. Yes, Elvis Presley. I even want to live in a world where I have to sit through Elvis telling us that he's "itching like a man on a fuzzy tree" while I wait for something better to play.

The title of this post is from "98.6" by Keith: a one-hit wonder that you're not likely to hear on the radio anytime soon. I've just bought it from iTunes so that I can listen to mp3s instead of listening to the radio. Take that, WJIM! I'm sure that'll... teach you... something... If I knew who your sponsors were, I'd boycott them! I am a 21-29 year old female, dammit! I am your demographic and I don't want the stuff you're pushing at me! I demand to be heard!

Well, if you're going to ignore me and choose to be the same old boring white-bread music station, can I have your CDs?

There's an AM station that comes in ONLY in Ann Arbor (well, maybe a little outside) because it's so small called Honey radio. It used to be around when we were younger and then disappeared and is now back. Ask my dad about it.

Boo to all radio stations being the same! I liked that Coldplay song the first 10 times I heard it. Now at time 80000000 I don't like it so much. Stupid radio stations that have playlists consisting of 10 songs.

I have pretty much given up on radio. I listen to one station here in Akron, OH when I first wake up to get the top news stories and, more importantly, traffic and weather and that is about it. Half an hour a day. Other than that it is all podcasts or music from my collection.

You could listen online to some of the many UK stations that play oldies. I'd be happy to e-mail you a list of URLs.

Alas, all of my radio-listening happens in the car. I just need to get an mp3 player and an FM transmitter thingy.

Hey Sarah! I found an awesome station in Cincinnati whilst driving through this past week-end WMAX I believe (97.7 perhaps or thereabouts) it played an awesome and varied selection from classic rock, oldies, contemporary, blah, blah, blah . . . Picked it up north of Lexington KY but lost it north of Dayton . . . I also discovered via Uncle John an oldies station out of Birmingham and one out of Brighton (somewhere in the 90's on the dial) I totally agree with you though, I get sick of the same song on every radio station and it's enough to get me not to listen . . . good luck in your search!
