Boom!
Fortunately, I was right and I did like Deathly Hallows Part 2 a lot better the second time, once I had digested the things they cut and changed...
Here are my observations on my second viewing of HP7b:
- The Gringotts scenes are basically just as I imagined them, especially down in the area with the vaults.
- I love the face that Neville makes when he returns to the students camped out in the Room of Requirement and announces that he has a surprise for them. I wish I had a screenshot, but you'll just have to watch out for it on your subsequent viewings. [Update: here it is!]
- The Great Hall scene where Harry announces his presence is very well done and dramatic and, I dare say, an improvement from the book. It's interesting that you see McGonagall putting the Sorting Hat on young Severus's head when he arrives at Hogwarts, then later they're colleagues, then he ends up Headmaster. McGonagall probably has a lot of interesting stories to tell. Also, if you watch the background of this scene, I think it's Snape who knocks out the Carrows before leaving, although you can also interpret it as a rebounding curse that hits them accidentally, if you know nothing about Snape going in.
- I don't feel quite as bad about McGonagall sending the Slytherins to the dungeon now that I have been reminded that the Slytherin dormitories are in the dungeon.
- McGonagall had some pretty good lines, from telling Harry she was happy to see him, to "I've always wanted to use that spell!" My favorite part was when she went, "BOOM!" although my two quibbles about that are a) I don't know what she was talking about that Seamus was supposed to do involving a "BOOM". Was it how the Death Eaters' curses exploded as they hit the magical barrier? Was that Seamus's doing? And b) I still have this Flight of the Conchords song in my head, two hours after the movie ended.
- Members Only jackets: Coming to a fictional character near you! (They seem to be everywhere in fiction these days, but I haven't seen them in real life since I was in elementary school.)
- Once I got used to the Ron/Hermione kiss happening when it did, it was really cute, especially how they just giggled nervously afterward.
- I think Ginny has more chemistry with Neville in this film than with Harry. It would have been great if Neville had told Harry he was "mad for" Ginny instead of Luna¹. "Hope you don't mind, mate, but I'm going to try to get my snog on with your lady. And I bet she'll be up for it, because I'm kind of a BAMF."
- If I were a child watching HP7b, the parts that would have given me nightmares are a) when Voldemort is killed and his face sort of melts and flies away and b) when Voldemort and Harry are falling through the air and their faces meld into one and the Harry/Voldie combo face looks like the kind of creepy clown face that would pop out of a jack-in-the-box and scare you. I'm not a child, but this probably still could give me nightmares.
Your thoughts?
¹ On second viewing, I am still not over this. I may have growled and made strangle-Steve-Kloves gestures at the screen this time.

Seamus was the one in charge of blowing up the bridge. I didn't figure that out until my second viewing.
And I much prefer your Neville re-write.
