Listening to Harry Potter books-on-tape while driving seems like a good idea, until you're driving in the rain at the end of Deathly Hallows and you have to see through two levels of moisture. I don't have windshield wipers for my tears! http://youtube.com/watch?v=tXClBpytvRg Good news: I was actually sad when Dobby died this time. Apparently Jim Dale's narration added something to the story that was not there when The Voice Inside Srah's Head was reading the book last summer. Is it 2010 yet?...

What's the deal with polyjuice potion, anyway? In the movie version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the Crabbe/Goyle-polyjuiced Harry and Ron speak in their own voices, though they try to just grunt in true Crabbe/Goyle fashion so that Draco doesn't suspect anything. In the audiobook for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (a seriously over-polyjuiced book, by the way), Fleur sounds like herself when she's been polyjuiced to look like Harry, Harry sounds like himself when he's "Barny Weasley" but they all get new voices when they're polyjuiced into Mafalda Hopkirk, Reg Cattermole and Albert Runcorn, or...

I keep meaning to blog but: whenever I sit down to write a blog post I forget all of the brilliant ideas I came up with earlier in the day, andabout 20% of my thought processes this week have been devoted to work, 5% to other miscellaneous thoughts (including blog-ideas that I forget five minutes later) and 75% of my thought processes during any given day are related to Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and why they are so perfect that I am overwhelmed with emotion at every single thing that has ever happened to/between them in the books These...

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: my thoughts

In the past, when I've taken notes or "live-blogged" a new Harry Potter book, it's been mostly because I knew that when reading later books, I would want to look back at notes from earlier books - especially hints and clues that seemed relevant but weren't covered in that book (and were potentially being saved for later). That's one of the sad things about HP7: there are no later books! But I think these notes will serve two purposes: to record my first reaction to things and theories as the book goes on (like in book 6, where every few...

I'm going to go (attempt to) hide from the Internet for a while¹ (even though this was the closest I've come to Harry Potter spoilers). I will return to you all in the wee hours of Saturday, when I begin my liveblogging of book 7 (following the popularity of my book 6 notes). Come back and read along! ¹ Who am I kidding? I will probably be on the Internet all day tomorrow. Sigh....

While I was out for a walk last week I passed the textbook store in town where I had reserved my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I dropped in to ask about their Harry Potter festivities, because I could remember being told that they were opening sometime before midnight, but I couldn't remember the exact time. I asked the woman behind the counter what time they were opening for Harry Potter and she said, "11:45. 11:40. Half an hour before midnight." I don't know if she was just making it up as she went along, if she...

My copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is now on reserve at my local bookstore. I forgot that I even had a local bookstore until someone pointed out to me this week that one of the textbook stores in town also has a collection of real books. That's nice. I hadn't yet figured out how I was going to get Harry Potter, but I thought it would involve either driving an hour to Cincinnati, going up to Michigan for the weekend or hoping that they had it at Meijers. None of them had the right combination of: a)...

I've seen the new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows US cover art all over the Intarnest¹. The US cover is quite boring - the O in Potter has a little wing on it, so I think Harry's supposed to be reaching for the most enormous O-shaped snitch anyone has ever seen. Either that or the gold fleck that I'm assuming is the wing is a strangely-shaped snitch itself, but that's weird too. Anyway, I find it bizarre that Harry is spending his time tooling around a Quidditch stadium, when I thought book 7 was supposed to be about the...
