Excellence is good (I wish we were)

This is a really exciting time to be a Michigan fan. My director is a Notre Dame graduate, so this afternoon when talk turned to weekend plans, our conversation was basically My Team Is Going to Lose to Your Team. Both teams are 0-2 for the season so far, and going up against each other this weekend in what has been referred to as "Cripple Fight 2007" or "The Slump Buster Bowl". I think we have the advantage for MTIGTLTYT, though, with a freshman quarterback with half a game's experience (as opposed to a freshman quarterback with two games' experience), and losses to much smaller teams. But SOMEONE will end up 1-2 by the time this weekend is over!

Unless, as my sister points out, they are still 0-0 in overtime by Monday morning.

Sigh.

The Emu has only played one full game. He came in the second half of the Georgia Tech game, then played against Penn State.

I think this is the deepest, most hard-hitting sports commentary I've ever seen on your blog. Way to go!

Alfie, who did they have before him?

Tony, I shall accept that as a compliment.

As a huge ND fan, I feel obligated to back alfie up- but I still hope that we can play "decently" Saturday. I'm not even hoping for a win anymore. I have written off the entire season as a building year, and have high hopes for the next three years.

A couple of random things:

1. Don't be too quick to write off the whole season as a building year. Michigan won't face another team that runs the spread offense like Oregon and certainly won't face players who are that fast. The team is built to play against other big slow teams. You can probably write off the game against Penn State (which is entirely too fast), but teams like Wisconsin and MSU can still be beaten (unless, of course, the wheels have completely fallen off emotionally, in which case my alma mater (Illinois) may be one of the few Wolverine wins this year.

2. My favorite name for the game comes from ESPN's Bottom 10. They give the name out once a week, but this week the UM-ND game earned the title of "Pillowfight of the Week."

3. Looking to next year is a risky proposition. The defense may be really young and inexperienced, but your offense is pretty experienced and next year will be brand new.

4. On the other hand, after Lloyd Carr is fired resigns at the end of the season, you'll most likely be hiring Les Miles fresh off the national championship that his team seems headed for. That could make a world of difference, so maybe looking to next year is a good idea.

5. I have to wonder why Alfie is referring to ND's QB as the emu (I feel I must have missed something about him, and that it would be amusing). Personally, I prefer to call him the pickle, because his name is Clausen and that's how I referred to his brothers the whole time they were at Tennessee. Anyway, to answer the question you asked about who they had before him, they played three different players at quarterback in the first game and started out with a running quarterback.

Ok, that was more than a couple of things, but I'm shutting up now.

3, 4. Oh, no, I have no hope for next year, either. No Mike Hart, n00b QB, new coach, end of the Bo era? Sigh.

5. Emu. More emu.

End of the Bo era? If you mean coaches with connection to Schembechler, Miles played for and was an assistant under him. This is why many people think he'd leave LSU for U of M if said job happens to become available. So, if Carr leaves and if they get Miles (which will be expensive), it will continue that tradition.

And the Emu...that's just funny.

Oh, okay. I have no idea who this Miles person is. I am not a college football fan. I am just a Michigan fan. :D
