There are those who call me... Srah?

At my internship yesterday, the president of the organization called me into his office and we talked about who I would be reporting to and what my projects were going to be for the summer. While I was there, he mentioned another Sarah who works there and realized that there are now two of us.

"Everybody around here has a nickname," he explained, "Do you have a nickname?"

I don't know how much control I have over the bugginess of my eyes, so I'm not sure if they popped out of my head or not. Don't say Srah... don't say Srah...

I emitted my professional ho-ho-ho laugh, shaking my head. "No, not really."

"Well, we'll have to find you a nickname, then."

Faced with the threat of being found a nickname against my will, I admitted, "Well... some people call me Srah." I really didn't want to explain it and I thought it would be weird having people call me Srah at work.

"Srah? Like Que Sera Sera?"

"Exactly."

"Srah Srah Srah." He seemed amused. "Okay!"

We'll see if he remembers that by Tuesday. Why didn't I say SAM?

Possibly because Dad and I are the only ones who call you Sam. I think you should have said Sammypoo.

I think it's a little weird that everyone at work has a nickname. What, like Fluffy? Sport? Mr. Banana?

Well, one co-worker came up to me and said, "Don't feel weird about the nickname thing... mine is Kiwi."

Because they're brown and fuzzy on the outside and green and squishy on the inside?

That's because your ARE srah... and that's hardly a bad nickname. I've had all kinds of them, from "Flex" (because of my double-jointed shoulders) to "Soltzenfus" (a mangled pronunciation of 'Stoltzfus', one of the Amish kids caught in Lancaster for dealing drugs, and since i went to college in Lancaster, of course i must be in the Amish Farmer Gang, right?) :)

Yeah, I just like to keep boundaries between my real life, my online life and my professional life... and being called Srah at work feels like I'm endangering that.

Isn't everyone in Lancaster called Stoltzfus? I *heart* Witness.

I feel odd being called 'Urs' at work. It would be even weirder if I was called 'Ursy'

I would have gone with the SAM route. Then you could wear your Sam I Am tee shirt.

gravatar srah - April 30, 2004 - 1:21 PM -

I'm not wearing a t-shirt to work!

gravatar mommy - April 30, 2004 - 1:45 PM -

Just so they would remember to call you SAM. I'm not saying you should wear it every day, but maybe on casual Friday or in your case Wednesday.

You're not wearing a shirt at work? Wow. They're liberal there!

This is like that episode of Seinfeld where "friend George" collided with "relationship George".
