Is it a breakup if it never had a chance to get started?

I hate it when Neil Diamond has the words for my situation, because I don't want to become that person who endlessly quotes Neil Diamond, thinking that he's some kind of god of lyrics-writing when he really writes a lot of crap. Oh wait, I already am the person who endlessly quotes him, so I might as well keep going. I feel like The Neil is singing to me:

But I got an emptiness deep inside
And I've tried
But it won't let me go
And I'm not a man who likes to swear
But I never cared
For the sound of being alone

I don't care for that sound either, Neil, but maybe it's best for everyone involved if I listen to it for a while.
