'With Brigitte Bardot playing part of hypotenuse'
"Plagiarize,
Let no one else's work evade your eyes,
Remember why the good Lord made your eyes,
So don't shade your eyes,
But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize..."
- "Lobachevsky", Tom Lehrer
One thing that grad school is really good at is putting the fear of god into you. Or the fear of university, anyway. All I've heard during this week of introductions is warning after warning about plagiarization. And now Cheryl brought it up, too (no doubt herself inspired by countless warnings at Kent).
Now I'm afraid to write anything. Clearly I'm not going to go lifting chunks of text from places and passing them off as my own, but it's things like using ideas without citing them and making an effort but improperly citing things that scare me.
I was going to use JohnHannah.net as my example of a collection for Social Systems & Collections until I remembered that it's one big copyright no-no and I'd rather not draw attention to that...
I'm sure I didn't correctly cite the Tom Lehrer song, but a) I don't know what the Internet protocol for citations is, b) That site probably didn't have permission to republish the lyrics in the first place and c) Oh well.
Remind me not to go to any more lectures on the Ethics of the Information Professional.

Actually, we haven't talked about plagerism too much. Just at orientation, but not actually in classes. I think we're supposed to know by now.
So many people quote things online, or even have sites dedicated to them (I've found numerous Ninja Rap websites). I don't know how worried I'd be, but it somehow does seem against copyright.
