A house made of cheese? I'd move in tomorrow!

Sheri has requested a story about cheese. And I am a people-pleasing kind of people.

All of my life, I've been rather obsessed with cheese. Not necessarily with eating it or being a connoisseur - because I only really developed a taste for exotic cheeses in the last year - but mostly with the word and the concept of "cheese".

In middle school, "cheesy" (and its middle-school-French translation, fromagey) was one of our favorite words. We used it in the normal connotation, of something that was kitschy or ridiculous, but I seem to remember also going through a period where "cheesy" meant "good". Who knows? We wore our coats upside-down and inside out, too. We were strange children.

The height of our cheese obsession was probably late in high school, when my friend Becky hosted our Cheese Party. Dude, we are such nerds. Anyway, everyone brought a different cheese or cheese-related food. We had cheddar cheese and crackers, cheez whiz, Wensleydale, cheez curls, and cheesecake for dessert. We stuffed our faces and watched Wallace & Gromit videos.

Cheese is good. To an extent. There really are limits to the amount of cheese you should or can eat at one time, especially when you are 16 or 17 years old and can't drink wine to cut through the cheese. There really is no other beverage to drink with such vast amounts of cheese. It makes me feel rather ill just thinking of the amounts of cheese we ate.

I don't think "cheesy" meant "good" anymore after that.

The first thing I do when I get to my moms or my grandmas is hit the fridge and grab a slice of cheese. My brother and sister do the same thing and now our kids do it.

Mmmm...cheese....

Cheesy means naff, or kitsch in the UK. It did when I was at school, anyway.

Normally, it means the same thing over here. We just stole it to twist it to our meaning. Sort of like being proud to be dorks.

...when you are 16 or 17 years old and can't drink wine to cut through the cheese.

Sadly, I missed the word through in there.

That made me laugh. Hnyar hnyar hnyar! Those of you readers who are in my house at this moment may have heard it and thought it was a moose, but it was, in fact, I.

"It's fromagey in the springtime, it's fromagey in the fall, it's fromagey summer, when the trees are tall. It's fromagey door to door, it's fromagey on the floor, oh fromagey, you're never a bore."

I bet you didn't expect this from me! I *could* go on.

gravatar srah - September 29, 2003 - 6:18 PM -
