Tonight's special: Clobbered Cobbler

Which syllable do you stress in the word "insurance"? I am just starting to figure out that I have moved far enough south that the stress has changed syllables from what I'm used to. I won't prejudice your answer by telling what I've moved to and from.

Also, people in this area seem to feel free to use "smashed" as an adjective to describe food preparation techniques. I know I've seen that at least three times, but I can't remember where the third was. To me, "smashed" does not connote "awesome food-type goodness" but rather describes "detritus after a visit from The Hulk" or at least "things that have been mashed with great violence, to the point where bits of it splattered against the wall and had to be scraped onto your plate. Mind the lead paint chips."

I've been thinking about the word "insurance" too much to tell you how I say it. Sometimes it's INsurance, and sometimes it's inSURance. Also, sometimes, we use "smashed" in reference to food, particularly potatoes. Instead of mashed potatoes, it's smashed potatoes, though it comes out more like one word: smashtaters.

Also, when I switched over to "we" in that comment, it wasn't because I suddenly had a royalty complex. No, it was because I was me and my family. You can take the people out of Arkansas, but you can't take the Arkansas out of the people.

Um, insert "writing about" between "I was" and "me and my family" in the previous comment.

I shouldn't be allowed to type before 9.

I pronounce it inSURance. And I've noticed 'smashed' in reference to potato-type foods more and more in the past few years because I think it makes the whole process sound a little more exciting and exotic to chefs and foodies of the world. I like that 'smashed potatoes' sounds airier and lighter and more intriguing than 'mashed potatoes,' but 'smashed' just sounds too pretensious to me, and food should never be pretensious.

I say inSURance. Also: "detritus after a visit from The Hulk" is cracking me up. "Hulk no like potatoes! Hulk smash!

Smashed... isn't that one of the WaffleHousian ways you can order your hash browns? I would blame Waffle House.

Even if it's not, I say we still blame them.

hey there srah. it's interesting how the place that you have moved to seems so very southern. as a fellow person moving to that place from the one you moved from, i wish to hear more of the differences. i only had time to develop a love for a certain ice cream, and a not-love for a certain chilli....

gravatar srah - February 20, 2006 - 8:25 PM -

What's the ice cream? I want some ice cream. Are you an Amy that I know?

gravatar Amy - February 23, 2006 - 11:48 PM -

yup, i'm from a certain information school near a certain endangered zoo. the ice cream is called Greaters, and the flavor of choice is blackberry chip. i don't even like fruit ice cream, and i loved it. i can't believe that the locals haven't taken you to it yet. you know about the chilli, right?

gravatar srah - February 24, 2006 - 6:31 AM -

Oh, THAT Amy. I forgot you were from around here. I thought you were a stranger. I've read all kinds of articles about the chili, but haven't had any yet. I'll go check out the ice cream this weekend. You don't have to tell me twice!
