60% of Michigan voters can bite me
Screw you, Michigan. And screw you, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, Ohio and Utah.
In Michigan, this piece of shit says that "the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose." (emphasis mine).
Way to go, America. Who needs civil rights, anyway? I don't know how someone could justify voting for something that so blatantly discriminates.
In other news, it looks like we're up for four more years of the rest of the world hating us and our president trying to convince us that America is better than everyone else and that he is protecting us from all the bad guys so we should just shut up and behave ourselves. Dissent is unpatriotic, yo!

I like to think of it as a last bastion of civilization in a creeping wasteland.
Nice pictures, by the way. SRAH!

Never in my life have I ever been so ashamed to stand next to my neighbors and call myself an American. I swear to you that its true.
What happened to social progress? What happened to cultural enlightenment? No longer can we read history books, see examples of ignorance, racism and sexism and feel displaced from it. No longer can we wonder how the atrocities of Nazi Germany and worldwide slavery/genocide could occur. By failing to remove our despot from office, we've proven ourselves no better.
Seriously? Maybe I should just pack up and leave. I can't be a part of this anymore.

Michigan is the suck! So is the rest of the country. "Oh Canada..." grrrrr.
NeighborGuy - November 3, 2004 - 1:21 PM - ℓ
I know it is little consolation, but Washtenaw County voters voted against that proposal, 60% to 40%.
North Dakota and Oregon could be added to your screw-you-too list, as they passed similar measures.

Washtenaw county should secede from the state

my sympathies to all of you who use your brains rather than your fears to beat back the darkness. i was a resident of texas under governor bush and high-tailed it back to my northern homeland in 1999 before the whirlwind. canada has its own share of problems, but if any of you hanker for a visit to the arctic, gimme a holler.

I'm moving to Canada. In even more lovely news, there was a press report *after* the elections that stated that Dick Cheney will not be acting as VP for all 4 years. He will undoubtedly retire in the next 2, while the Republicans still have control of the Senate and will allow any super-conservative nut to replace him. First on the lisr is reportedly the former mayor of NYC. Maybe Canada isn't far enough....

How deppressing to be completely honest and say I am so ashamed of this country, that we have allowed ourselves to be manipulated by fear and hatred of other people.
I am terrified of what the next 4 years will bring, given the "carte blanche" mr bush now has. Canada is becoming more and more of a real possibility every day.

This morning I woke up and posted in my weblog that I am ashamed to be an American. And a few minutes later, I edited my post to retract that sentiment. I'm not ashamed to be an American. I love my country and I feel blessed to have been born here. There's no shame in it.
Today I am embarrassed. What happened yesterday is a disgrace. Eleven states turned out record numbers to institutionalize homophobia and, by no coincidence, carry George W. Bush to victory. It was a calculated effort that some might call brilliant. I call it disgusting.
I hope history remembers Bush as the President who was elected by hate. That's all the vindication I need. Put it in all the history books for everyone to see: a failed President held his office because America was bigoted, and for no other reason.
These are trying times, but, as a Daily Kos contributor wrote this morning, "Its tough on the psyche to be beaten.Throughout our countrys history, abolitionists, suffragists, union organizers, anti-racists, antiwarriors, civil libertarians, feminists and gay rights activists have challenged the majority of Americans to take off their blinders. Each succeeded one way or another, but not overnight, and certainly not without serious setbacks."
Keep on keeping on.

Yes, over 59 MILLION Americans voted for Bush, and as insulted as you all here seem to be by this election's results, it can very well be also quite insulting to those 59 million people for you to describe them as uncivilized, ignorant, racist, sexist, homophobic, socially unprogressive, culturally unenlightened, manipulated by fear and hatred, etc. I understand the anger and dissent, but jeez, get out of your macho-liberal blindness and try to truthfully understand the other side for once... You might learn something.

Personally, I think the state should remove the word "marriage" from its vernacular altogether. Marriage is a religious institution. The state should grant civil unions to whomever seeks them (straight or gay), and leave it up to the church to marry or not marry people.

It seems many others are also concerned over what's become of America: http://yglesias.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/unknown.jpg

haha - nice .jpg Lisa !! i suspect that it would probably become the United 'Federation' of Canada. please remember tho that Canada would not exist if the U.S. weren't next door, both in a historical sense and in the modern military-industrial complex sense.
in the interest of promoting a smidgin of understanding, i'd suggest reading "the world according to a bush voter"
we have no qualms when emotion trumps rationality in relationships - why should we expect more of politics ? as long as people are willing to be wilfully blind to the world around them, logic will never have any impact. if things are to change, liberals will have to tap into the reservoir of faith that drives conservatives, and conservatives will have to re-discover compassion for their neighbours.

*shakes head*. damn those alt-weeklies - when i saw 'GWB', the first thing i thought of was 'gay white boy' from their classifieds. then i saw the comment and realized it was an anonymous 'W' fan - talk about cognitive dissonance :)
anyway, the jpg that *Lori* linked to is now pasted up on my wall, but as i was smirking around the office yesterday showing it off to co-workers, i felt a bit guilty about the tag 'Jesusland'. from what i recall of my bible camp studies (hey, i was 10 - it's been awhile), Jesus was never one to be mean-spirited.
perhaps 'Bibleland' would be a more appropriate conception ? that would tie the present conflict more in line with other historical Biblical interpretation controversies (recently saw 'Luther' in Montreal) and maybe provide some guidance as to how to manage the resulting mess.
Sign me up--I want to open up a whole can of dissent.
