More family anecdotes

Mom: Me, I can marry for love. But you, you have to marry for height.

She has big ideas for the genetic future of this family. She hopes I'll find a basketball player. Dream on, Mummy. Really tall people creep me out, as does anyone shorter than me. I'm picky that way. Ideally, everyone around me should be within a few inches of the height that I am in my mind.

So you don't want me to play matchmaker and fix you up with one of the guys wandering this campus that is 6'5" or above?

gravatar srah - September 5, 2003 - 12:27 AM -

No tallies and no undergrads.

gravatar alfie - September 5, 2003 - 12:34 AM -

Well, that second one is definitely a new rule. The first one is expected because your last two boyfriends were 5'4" and 5'2." Or something.

gravatar alfie - September 5, 2003 - 12:45 AM -

Mommy, I will endeavor to make you happy because unlike your oldest child, I like tall people.

"...as does anyone shorter than me"

Does such a person exist?

I'm 5'10", or thereabouts. Does that put me out of contention? That and living about 4000 miles away?

gravatar srah - September 5, 2003 - 6:57 AM -

They do. And they frighten me.

I have no idea what the limits are. Actually, weight and personality come into it too. A very skinny person can be taller because they don't loom frighteningly over me and make me fear being stepped on. And some people have looming personalities.

It's about time a suitor presented himself. Damned Katie, always stealing them all.

Um, how shor . . . er . . . tall are you?

gravatar srah - September 5, 2003 - 7:42 AM -

I am a giant! See guesses here.

gravatar alfie - September 5, 2003 - 8:22 AM -

As someone shorter than Srah, yes, we definitely do exist.

gravatar Mr. Hibbity Gibbity (the scourge of short people) - September 5, 2003 - 8:52 AM -

Alfie,

How tall are you?

gravatar katie - September 5, 2003 - 9:05 AM -

Srah, how tall are you in your head, anyway?

You raise an interesting question, regarding how physical attributes play a part in mate selection. (Did I actually just say mate selection???)

For me, they have to be athletic. Not Aaaahnold buff, or anything, just athletic. So necessarily not overweight or incredibly skinny. However, refrigerator-sized football players need not apply. Height... if a guy is shorter than me, I have trouble thinking of him as full-grown. In my mind I keep thinking he has yet to 'bloom', which makes me think he's in junior high, or something.

gravatar alfie - September 5, 2003 - 12:24 PM -

Just shy of 5'0."

gravatar srah - September 5, 2003 - 12:59 PM -

Necks must be narrower than heads. This is an important rule in srah-land.

gravatar katie - September 5, 2003 - 1:23 PM -

Yes, that is a rule for me too. Brains must also be smaller than heads. But larger than a pea.

gravatar srah - September 5, 2003 - 1:32 PM -

Yes. And sense of humor must be bigger than head.

gravatar Jez - September 5, 2003 - 1:36 PM -

So all those people whose huge brains engulf their tiny heads are out of the picture then, Katie? Were you thinking of the aliens from Mars Attacks! there?

gravatar katie - September 5, 2003 - 2:06 PM -

Well, men are from Mars...

gravatar Cheryl - September 5, 2003 - 4:20 PM -

Your mom's funny.
