A query

How do you pronounce the word "query"? My professor pronounced it differently than I would have, and I wondered if I was wrong or if there are multiple ways.

I pronounce it Queer-E (not k-where-E)

Just looked it up though, and Webster doesn't agree with me.

I'm with Richard, except I would write it "kweer-ee" and "kweh-ree".

That's how I do, too.

kweeri

k'WHIR-e is preferred, as in, the last two syllables of inquiry.

k'WHERE-e is okay too.

Meh.

How does your prof say it? I'd say the first, but not too too much eeeeeeeee...eeeee.

gravatar srah - September 30, 2003 - 12:53 PM -

He says "kwehry".

your prof is right, but even though my dictionary doesn't say so, I'm still going to pronounce it:

kweeeeerie

(like Number 5 did on "Short Circuit")

Your prof is wrong. Or at least he would be on this side of the Atlantic.

You say kwehry, I say kweeri - let's call the whole thing off.

I say "kweer-y", but if my dad from South Jersey were still alive he'd say "kwurr-y".
