Punaise, je parle pas français

Why am I so shy about speaking French to Francophones in the U.S.? I barely ever talked to Antoine in French, unless it was French Table and I was forced to. Argh, I always feel like they're judging me, even though I know that French-speaking foreigners are often more judgmental about people's French skills than the French are. I don’t feel like that with Hispanophones, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm a French major and I'm afraid people will tell me I've been wasting my time because I suck. With Spanish I know I’m a beginner and everyone else knows I'm a beginner, so I just try.

Anyway, all of this brought on by the library's French intern who, in addition to being French, has about a million surnames and is aristocratic or some such nonsense. Eek. His "family home" (egad) is in Auvergne, so I really should be talking to him, but I can’t bring myself to do it...
