Happy Mardi Gras!
I spent Mardi Gras 2000 in Louisiana - visiting various Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans, Lafayette, and some crappy podunk town I hated because their parade consisted of the paraders getting really drunk and then trying to ride their horses into the crowd and their costumes were suspiciously similar to KKK robes.
Louisiana is not my favorite state. I think it's mostly because I didn't like the weather and I didn't like Mardi Gras. And the fact that I had to ride around in a van with Carlos, the Spanish Native Speaker who didn't like to bathe. And the fact that the trip came as a part of an awful class on French Louisiana, which was mostly about some big Cajun/Creole literary revival that happened for about two years in the 90s and was never heard from again and listening to traditional Cajun songs about 'Ti' Jean who fell out of the boat and drowned.
I went around to the various parades and collected beads from each one. Everyone on the trip was competing to see who got more. Then we got back to Michigan and I realized I was weighed down with a crapload of plastic beads and what was I going to do with them now? I think I gave them away. They should throw food. You can do stuff with food.
I much prefer Fat Tuesday in Michigan, with our high Polish population. Our Fat Tuesday tradition is a deep-fried Polish jelly pastry called a paczki.
How do you celebrate Fat Tuesday?
