100 things

Updated: 2006

  1. I have been to the United States, England, Canada, France, Switzerland, Scotland, Belgium, Chile and Israel, in that order.
  2. In addition to returning to the places I've already been to, I would like to go to Iceland, Peru, Egypt, Quebec, The Netherlands, St-Pierre-et-Miquelon, French Guyana, Bulgaria, Austria, Germany, Japan, Zimbabwe, Cambodia and many other places.
  3. I have considered these places home: Ann Arbor, Michigan, Albion, Michigan, Grenoble, France, Vichy, France and (srahtown), Ohio.
  4. I speak (spoke?) French fluently.
  5. I don't like to tell people I speak French fluentlybecause people assume that means you know everything.
  6. I also speak Spanish, but at the level of a seven-year-old or so.
  7. I took a semester of Mandarin Chinese but gave up because I couldn't read or write.
  8. I would like to learn Dutch, Arabic (working on it!), Bulgarian, Japanese and Swedish.
  9. I was born August 26, 1980, the same day as Macaulay Culkin.
  10. I was born with my umbilical cord wrapped around my neck and saved myself from strangulation by putting my thumb between the cord and my neck. I love to tell this story because the doctor said I was "a smart little girl right from the beginning".
  11. When I was younger, I was a sort of pseudo-intellectual in training and made a lot of effort to appear smarter than my classmates.
  12. Then I got lazy.

  14. I have been making webpages since I was 16.
  15. My favorite movies are Sliding Doors, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Tampopo and L'Auberge Espagnole.
  16. I have an irrational fear of being snuck up on from behind in restaurants and almost always have to have my back to the wall. I can usually control this enough to hide it and avoid embarassing myself in front of strangers, but I always feel more comfortable if I can pick my seat first.
  17. I do not like bridges, especially when they are planks or a grid. I don't like to be able to see down to whatever's below. But even in a car going over a solid, sturdy bridge, I am afraid that I will be sucked out of the car and over the edge of the bridge.
  18. I also have a problem with things touching my neck and can't wear turtlenecks, necklaces, or some tight-necked t-shirts. The level of my sensitivity varies from day to day.

  25. When I was confirmed at age 12, I just mouthed along with the group for all of the parts I didn't agree with.
  26. I am excessively organized, which leads to enormous messes. Rather than get my CDs or books out of alphabetical order, I generally create To Be Filed piles that grow and grow and grow and never get put away. Everything has its place and its place to sit while it waits to be put in its real place. It makes sense to me.
  27. I love stationery and office supply stores.
  28. When I am in France, I miss: family and friends, speaking English, oldies radio, Hershey's chocolate, chai tea, English-language books, singing at the top of my lungs in the car, inventing words, informality, Oreos, and rectangular pillows.
  29. When I am in Michigan, I miss: family and friends, speaking French, baguettes, Nestea pêche, menthes à l'eau, cheeses, the relaxed pace of life, multilingualism, French music, textos, mountains, history, making disparaging remarks about Americans, small cars, walking and trains.
