Oh, they say she died one winter/ When there came a killing frost

I always thought that Fraulein Maria was on crack, but snowflakes that stay on my eyelashes are pretty cool. The first snow of the season has arrived in Srahtown, and it's a very calm, floaty type of snow that blows softly on a gentle breeze, but falls mostly downwards. It's more like movie-snow than the sideways biting snows we'll probably have later this season. My usual snow-behavior consists of shuffling around, facing the ground, with all of my body wrapped up in coats and scarves and only my eyes sticking out. Today, though, I turned my bare face up to...

Hello, my name is Sarah and I am an Internet addict

Due to big storms in the area, I have no power right now. But fortunately the university does! And even more fortunately, classes (and work for non-essential personnel) were cancelled today before they knew the university would get power back. So I'm dropping into my office to check out the Internet. Hello!...

Summertime... and the parkin' is easy...

Summer is held at the wrong time of year. In Srahtown in the summer, there is suddenly an abundance of parking available. You can arrive late and still get a good spot. You can leave during the day, come back and park in the same spot... or a better one! It is glorious! Vive l'été! This is not the case the rest of the year. The rest of the year, there are fierce battles over parking spaces, with shivs and chains and tridents and suchlike. Academics in their tweed jackets and elbow patches hold their Very Academic Pipes in one...

The Most Exciting Thing That Happened to Me Over Break, by Srah, age Seven (or in the style thereof)

The most exciting thing that happened to me over break was when I lost my hat. It was a red hat. It was windy when I lost my hat. My hat flew right off my head! I could not chase my hat because my hat was blown away. My hat plus the wind equals faster than me. I hope a homeless person finds my hat and my hat keeps the homeless person's head warm. It is a good hat. I miss my hat. The End....

Now on the sidewalk - ooh, sunny morning, uh huh - lies a body, just oozin' life

Question: Would it kill somebody to shovel the sidewalks in this godforsaken town? Follow-up question: If so, who would that "somebody" be? Can we just take a moment to consider whether his/her life is as valuable as me not slipping on the sidewalk and having warm, dry feet¹? I am thinking that - unless the "somebody" is me - my feet are probably going to win out. Ready the torches and pitchforks, everyone! ¹ I forgot to put on my boots when I went to class today².² :(...

Then goes tromping around wearing BOOTS like Gaston

I can't remember when the last time was that I owned proper winter boots. My last pair of boots were lace-up style and came up to my ankle, more like hiking boots than waterproof, snowproof ones. And I lost those somehow (or threw them away?) before I moved down to Ohio. Boots are one of those things that I don't usually think of until I need them, and then when I need them the in-store selection is scant and/or strange. Fortunately this year I planned ahead and was able to find sensible, plain-looking, faux-fur-lined black boots. I can even tuck...

La aref!

I haven't written anything in Arabic for a while. I am sort of unmotivated. My tutor/student worker suggested that if I'm not feeling challenged, I could ask the teacher for some extra work. Ha ha! No. I am too lazy for that. Instead I will challenge myself by leaving my homework until the very last moment (frequently the morning before I go to work, sometimes later) and end up trying to do the exercise a couple of answers ahead as we go along in class to see if I can get away with it. Often I do. Anyway, I'm still...

I am your sunshine, your only sunshine

I don't like to toot my own horn¹, but the weather is sunny and beautiful in Seattle again - despite all the rain that was forecasted for this weekend - and the only reason I can think of is that I am here. Love power, it's the power of a sweet flower

I lost power around 4am this morning. When the power went out, something in my apartment went "beep" and woke me up. It's good to know that I can be awoken by unfamiliar "beep"s because I have been known to sleep through smoke alarms before. I didn't wake up very much... just enough to look at my watch (fortunately there was moonlight or something, because there didn't seem to be any lights anywhere around) and to think "If my power doesn't come back on, I will have to stay huddled under my blankets until it does. Catching up with srah

I'm not keeping up so well with the blogging, since I don't have a working computer at home right now and all of my time is filled with cooking, walking and trying to fix the dangèd computer. Here's a bit of what I've been up to: On Saturday, I fixed Isidore sort of by accident. Aaaaand there goes Miss Gulch on a bicycle

There is a strong low pressure system moving through the area today. It started out as a very windy day and has now turned into a very windy day with ominous dark clouds overhead. No, the clouds aren't really ominous. The sky today can be better described as evil. "Ominous" suggests that the clouds are saying, "You'd better look out or you're going to get rained on" or "Guess what? We're bringing an ice storm your way." These clouds are saying, "You'd better hope you're good at dodging entire trees as they come whipping towards your head at 50mph, sucka,...

Rainless in Seattle

Seattle has a reputation for being bleak and rainy all the time. However, in my vast experience with that city¹, there has been no such weather. When apete and I were in Seattle last weekend, the sun shone warmly down on us every single day. I think I got a sunburn in freaking Seattle. We were told that Seattle only gets 54 days of sunshine all year, so apparently I used up 7% of Seattle's sunshine in one weekend visit. I think it's all lies. I think Seattle is trying to keep the tourists out. It never actually rains in...

Cup o' Soup ≠ falafel

Yesterday, the news told me that it was the first day of spring. Then the weather report told me to expect Winter Storms. I don't know what it is anymore, but I want it to stop. Good morning! Everyone's dead except you!

I woke up this morning to a lovely story on Morning Edition that went along the lines of: "The morning commute will be slowed on the East Coast this morning, due to snowstorms that killed twenty or so people in the Midwest." What is a bigger news story here? Midwesterners killed or East Coasters inconvenienced? Why are the deaths of Midwesterners simply a footnote to a story about East Coast traffic? Oh America... your coastcentric media coverage is pathetic and disgusting!...

I wish the Ice Man would goeth

Face to beak with nature

I gave Mr B****** a ride home yesterday and had to slow down for ducks. His neighborhood was full of them! It was great, because I like ducks. They are cute and delicious. But there were, like, 30 ducks just wandering around the subdivision. What were they doing there? Why weren't they hibernating or flying south or whatever ducks do in the winter? Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes and the top of my head and everywhere...

I've noticed today that people have been going to obscene lengths to hold doors for me. I'll be, like, eight feet away from the door and they'll wait for me. I've decided that this is either because: a) I look DAAAAAAAAYUM good, or b) I look DAAAAAAAAYUM bedraggled and pitiful. Given the heavy snowfall, I'm inclined to believe the latter. But fear not; given my unswerving egotism, I'm also inclined to believe the former. I bet my eyelashes are quite fetching all caked with snow....

Fermentation and Fumier*

It has been very hot here for the past few days. Very hot indeed. We are surrounded by farm country. Very surrounded indeed. Somehow the heat has mixed with the location in such a way that the smell of manure is constantly wafting around. It is on the breeze, but it is also in the air when the air is still. It is constantly with us, and there is no escape. It's not that bad. I mean, it smells like manure, but you kind of get used to it, much as I imagine farm folk do. However, on a trip...

She woke up around 9 on Tuesday morning and wondered why no one had woken her up or taken her to school. The weather and - what was I talking about?

Yesterday, there was a crisp juiciness as I bit into the nectarine that was very pleasurable - until I realized it wasn't a nectarine at all, but a HUMAN HEAD!! Sorry. Distracted there. I spent yesterday afternoon and evening running around like a chicken with my head cut off, as the snow began to fall. I'm afraid to venture out into the cold and snow and ice. I think I'll just hole up here until spring comes. I have tea a-plenty, so I'll manage to survive. Speaking of cold, snow and ice, whoever designed Vichy was clearly smoking crack. Here we are with a town full of precisely (I counted) one hillion jillion old people. Instead of having concrete sidewalks, which would give some traction, the whole town is covered in a slick, smooth tile. The ice is better to walk on than the salted parts, because it gives you traction, whereas the tile is...

First snow!

Snow has finally arrived in Vichy! ... make it go away....

Let it snow let it snow let it snow

They are having ice storms in Charlotte, North Carolina, and I have not yet seen a flake of the white stuff. Don't, however, get the impression that I'm complaining. Charlotte can have the snow, for all I care, and can take with it the ice and the yucky muddy sludge that snow melts into....

I accidentally came to school today. I forgot the 1ASMS have a test, so I have no classes today. This wouldn't be so bad if a) the Internet worked, so I had something to do while I was here or b) I hadn't walked to school in the freezing freezing Michiganesque cold. They are doing work on my bus stop, so I had to walk to the next one and missed the bus in the process. And to think I considered wearing a skirt today. Brrrrrrrrrrrr....

Cute but dumb

We had a brief respite from the cold, but I think winter is coming now. Poop. "J'ai froid aux jambes," said the dumb girl who wore a skirt today....

The weather has been rather schizophrenic lately. Or maybe manic/depressive. You'd have to ask the psych major about that. I don't know my psychology terms or how to relate them to the weather. One minute the sun's out and the next there's a thunderstorm....

Hell no

It did not snow last night. I am in denial....

What's up with these short posts?

I guess I'm in a short-post mood. At least I'm in a posting mood, which I wasn't at the beginning of the week. The weather report lied to me. It is sunny and nice again today. Mmmmmmmm. Not as warm as yesterday, but it's the sun that matters. I'm not an outdoors person, but after a long grey winter, I feel a bit like a sunflower, turning my face up and trying to absorb as much sun as possible. Maybe there's a bit of chlorophyll in my veins after all. The French word for sunflower is tournesol, meaning that it...

Sunshiney goodness

The weather is so nice today. The sun is shining, it's about 55 degrees, people are walking around without coats on, classes are being held outside... Is it too much to hope that Spring is finally sprung? Sigh. Yes. Clouds and rain and forty degrees for the next 10 days. When the days are like this, I bask lazily in the sunshine all day long, then get depressed and frustrated in the evening because I didn't get anything done. Sigh....

Hack ack ack

Running in the cold hurts my lungs. Or my throat. Or something. It hurts so much I can't tell where. But my paper's handed in, so that's all that matters. It's so cold outside. It's so hot in the room. I hate winter....

Instead of the big puffy bumblebee-flakes that were coming down a few days ago, the wind has kicked in to help and there are now little tiny hornets flying at me and stinging my face. I'm moving to Tahiti....

The stuff that minor headlines are made of

ALBION, MI -- A van carrying eleven Albion College students and their organization's advisor to a conference in Ohio careened off the road today, killing everyone inside. One student, later identified by the tag in her underpants as Sarah M*****, managed to croak a few last words to our reporter on the scene before croaking herself. "Damned snow and ice," she whispered, clutching at the reporter's arm as the rescue team tried to dig her out from under the pile of CDs and games she had brought along on the trip, "I knew this was going to happen. Eleven students...

The weather demons are jumping up and down on my soul

I shouldn't have said anything. The weather was beautiful and lovely yesterday and today it was cold and rainy. Which is only one day on the way to this weekend, when we are supposed to be having something like ice storms as we drive to Ohio. Poo poo poo....

...In the middle of July

I woke up this morning to Shades Apart's "Stranger By the Day" which starts out "Snow is falling from the sky..." It prompted me to look out the window and emit a rather unladylike expletive. I. Hate. Snow....

The weather is so beautiful...

The weather is so beautiful and springy. I hate winter. I hope it's gone for good, but that's probably a little too optimistic for January....

I have psychic powers...

I have psychic powers. Or half a psychic power. As I demanded, I got snow just in time for xmas, but the part about it all disappearing by the 26th fell through....

It feels like September...

It feels like September today. Or maybe spring. Whatever it is, it is wholly inappropriate for December. It's wrong it's wrong it's wrong. But please, Gods of Weather, do not pay attention to me. Even though I can't deal with this warm weather in my little walnut-brain, I don't want the cold weather to come. Here is my weather request: Exactly like this all through the winter except for December 24th and 25, when it will be nice and snowy. The snow will melt and the icky sludge and mud will disappear by the 26th. Thank you for your attention....

I hate snow.

I hate snow. I. HATE. SNOW. At first, it was sort of a fluke. Oooh, snow on 25 October - how amusing. They were just little flakes - looked like the dandruff of the gods. Now it's really puffy big chunks of snowflakes. This is not funny. This is not a good joke. It had better warm up or somebody's gonna get it. If it starts sticking, there's gonna be trouble....
