When I want to run away/ I drive off in my car

You may remember, from last year's NaBloPoMo, my training for and participation in a 5k walk on Thanksgiving. My parents, sister and I all participated in Ann Arbor's Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 5k Walk/Run on Thanksgiving morning, and it was a nice way to spend some time together and do an activity that we all enjoy, as well as the first time that any of us had walked in a 5k race before. We started out at a leisurely pace, chatting with each other and with the bicyclist who marked the end of the race group, then continued at a...

Soy un perdedor

Noor and I had a competition at Walker Tracker for the month of July, and I lost. I lost badly. Noor is almighty, and much more disciplined than I am. Being more disciplined than me is not saying much, though. For the record, Noor not only beat me, but actually did quite well. Go Noor!...

Get up offa that thing/ And walk 'til clothes fit better

In news tangentially related to the Butler Gas Station Did It'">previous post, I went to the doctor the other week for my allergies (she actually believed I was sick this time!) and they weighed me. My weight tends to fluctuate within about a 10-pound range, but it had fluctuated out of that range to the point where I was eligible to give blood. Oops! I didn't think too much of it until I started realizing that my pants were a little tight this week, and that I also hadn't recorded my steps on Walker Tracker in a month or more,...

The Butler Gas Station Did It

Earlier this week, the prices for a gallon of gas and a gallon¹ of cigarettes were the same at my local gas station. Now, at the end of the week, gas is a few cents more expensive. I feel like the gas station is trying to subliminally encourage me to give up driving and take up smoking instead. THANKS A LOT FOR TRYING TO MURDER ME, GAS STATION. I wish they advertised other things on the same sign, like: Regular Unleaded: $3.99Marlboros: $3.85Walking: Free, you lazy cow, and better for you that the other two options. ¹ Or whatever unit...

Ah do-run-run-run?

(The most annoying thing about blogging is that the posts do not write themselves. I have been making notes all week and am only now catching up on actually writing out the damned things.) My favorite office on campus, the Office of Employee Health and Well-Being, has come through again with yet another exciting activity. Starting last Monday, I am now a member of Team [University I Work At], a training program for a 5k run/walk race in April. I originally thought that I would just sign up for the race and not waste $20 on the training sessions, but...

I have often walked down this street before/ But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before

My family walked in our first 5k walk today. If anyone had asked us - which they didn't - we were prepared to call ourselves ¡Team Holt!, which had the dual advantages of sounding like ¡Steve Holt! when we shouted and raised our arms in the air in celebration, and also might have led people to believe our name was Holt, lending us an air of anonymity that would have helped when they were shutting down the race route before we were finished. ¡Team Holt!...

Yet there's the bold, brave spring of the tiger that quickens your walk¹

I am now in training for My Very First 5k Walk, which I will be doing on Thanksgiving morning with the rest of my family and maybe my best friend and her boyfriend and my cousin and her wife. And by "in training" I mean "I bought some new shoes! I will probably spend most of the next two weeks 'breaking them in' while sitting on the couch." ¹ Oh, I should mention that I may repeat musicals this month. Which I may or may not have done above. Surprise!...

I like where I are/ When I can, find my car

I am apparently senile. This morning I walked out the door to go to work, looked out at the parking lot and discovered my car was not there. I momentarily freaked out. I had just been talking to my Arabic professor this week about how what little crime there is in Srahtown usually consists of crimes of opportunity, and how I've managed to avoid anything so far by a) not getting drunk, b) not being out on the streets at 3am, when all of these incidents seem to occur and c) locking my doors. Now here I was, being so...

Monkeys' brains, while popular in Cantonese cuisine, are not often to be found... in Washington D.C.!

As you may know, I went to Maryland/DC a few weekends ago to visit Katie and Cheryl and use some of the vacation time I've been building up. Photos are here! Friday I flew to Baltimore, which makes me think of Hairspray. Katie and I had dinner and bubble tea and... I can't remember what else we did. We must have just sat around talking until midnight! Saturday On Saturday Katie and had a nice late morning (which was good for recovering from a long Friday at work and sitting near teenagers while waiting for my flight) then set off...

'He reminds me of my father.' 'Was your father ugly?'

Before I set out on my walk tonight, I went through my purse and decided what to throw into my backpack. Wallet, since I didn't know which direction I was going to go and I might need to buy something to drink in this heat.Cell phone, mostly so I could call people while I walk and forget that I'm walking.Keys to get in and out of my apartment.Camera... I never know whether to bring my camera, because it's extra weight that I don't need to carry but on the other hand, I always seem to need it when I don't...

Don't kill Arthur Weasley!

While I was out for a walk last week I passed the textbook store in town where I had reserved my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I dropped in to ask about their Harry Potter festivities, because I could remember being told that they were opening sometime before midnight, but I couldn't remember the exact time. I asked the woman behind the counter what time they were opening for Harry Potter and she said, "11:45. 11:40. Half an hour before midnight." I don't know if she was just making it up as she went along, if she...

Walk the boat

I was sad to discover that this ship doesn't have a walking track so I can't do laps around the deck. But thanks to that treadmill, I was able to get to 10,000 steps yesterday. You haven't lived until you've tried to walk on a treadmill on a ship that's anchored out at sea! I stumbled from one edge of the belt to the other and back and forth. It was quite an adventure in balance!...

Any more behavior like this and I'll have your stripes!

I went up to Ann Arbor this weekend to see some friends and celebrate my dad's birthday. I think the highlight of the weekend was being introduced to the game of Gorillas. Gorillas, for those of you who are uninitiated, is a game wherein my family members all try to get steps by walking around the house in circles at high speeds and try to avoid running into each other. It is called Gorillas because to an observer, it looks sort of like the chase scene at the end of The Pink Panther wherein a knight, a jester, a zebra...

Journey to the center of the Earth

In the past week and a half, I've met not only the guy who lives below me, but the girl who lives in the ground floor apartment below him. Due to the weather, I've also done a lot of my walking inside my apartment instead of venturing out to the rec center. It's nice to know that when I inevitably wear a hole through my apartment floor, the ensuing plummet through those two floors won't be quite so awkward....

Superstah!

I have been a walking fiend for the last few weeks! Unless I break my leg in the next two days, I am on track to actually meet my month's walking goal for the first time since October. Go srah!...

It's very evident/ These attentions are well meant

Apete gave me an mp3 player for Christmas, so ever since then I've been experimenting with different mixes of music to play on it while I go for my walks. It's pretty obvious that pop music like the Spice Girls and Britney Spears, while not exactly something you want to go around advertising to the world that you listen to, have a pretty good beat for keeping a good walking pace. So as long as you keep the volume low and those earbuds firmly pushed into your ear, no one need know. On the other hand, the tempo of Chayanne's...

2007: A Srah Odyssey

Hello Internet! I had a relatively Internet-free week (mostly just keeping up with WalkerTracker so that I could actually remember what caused me such abyssmal step-counts). It was awesome, but now I have a lot of reading to catch up on. As for me, I got to spend time with the boyfriend and his family as well as srahfam, have many many Christmases (Christmii?), see Spamalot, and go walking at the mall a couple of times. Now I'm back home with TONS of stuff to unpack, which will probably keep me busy until the next time I go home. This...

Well at least we're not round on our ends!

Yesterday I walked to the library as part of my HIGHEST STEPCOUNT DAY EVER. On the way there, another pedestrian passing in the other direction said, "Great shirt." I looked down and saw that I was wearing a Michigan sweatshirt. Ah, a fellow Wolverines fan! When I got to the library to pick up the books I had on reserve, the clerk said, "I don't know if I should give these to you." I thought, 'What have I done? Do I have enormous fines I don't know about? Did I reserve porn??' She continued, "... wearing that shirt." Aha! A...

Because you're mine, I walk online

Thanks to Ed, I have discovered Walker Tracker, which has many of the features of the previous step-tracking site I was using, but with more community interaction and graphs! Read my step logger! Watch my progress go up and down! Join this one now!...

Pedometerphile

Apete gave me a pedometer for my birthday. It is just like his, so rather than saying "How many steps have you taken so far? Is that a lot? How many did you do yesterday? I wonder how many I did. Do you think I did a lot?" I can track my own steps. So far, the best way I've found to keep track of my steps is with Steptracker. That way I can keep track of how many steps I did, and I can make a "comments" field to try to record my activities during the day and see...

And I would walk 500 miles... (6.10.02)

When I woke up this morning, my first thought was not Hmmm, how about I walk until my feet fall off? And yet I did. I will miss those feet, as I've had them for quite a while and have grown rather attached. Jennifer suggested last night that we go for a bike ride or a walk around the area, so we met up at 10am today. Finding no bike rental shops open, we set off on foot. We walked through Cusset and out the other side, throught a mountainous forest area that reminded me of Le pacte des loups....
