Today I did a lesson on Thanksgiving. It was not all I wanted it to be because the stinking Internet still isn't back, but it was okay. I used it on two classes. One was bored out of their minds and the other, one of my favorites if I'm allowed to say that, spent most of the time erupting into hysterical laughter that had nothing whatsoever to do with Thanksgiving. But at least they weren't dead. Anyway, I've been sidetracked. The point I wanted to make is that I told my students the story of Thanksgiving, then I told them...

One of the students asked me today if I was going to celebrate Halloween with the other American assistants. I think they have an overblown image of the importance of Halloween here. When I was in Grenoble, Halloween came and went and I thought 'I suppose I should have made an effort'. For me, Halloween can be passed over if you're not in the homeland. Halloween is really all about costumes and trick-or-treating, both of which are hard to incorporate into an adopted culture. What will be difficult for me is missing out on Thanksgiving. I'm thinking of the only Thanksgiving that really stands out as memorable. The others, in the same locations and with the same people, all sort of blend together. But last year's Thanksgiving dashes all over Grenoble in the rain and eventual Thanksgiving a la francaise were... quite different. Don't know if I'd say better, exactly, but different....
