We have all, at one point or another in our lives, been a Wookiee.

I think one of the reasons Star Wars episodes IV-VI are so appealing is that we have all been (or known someone who is) a whiny teenager, a kind of bitchy "princess", a smart aleck, a know-it-all, or the crazy old man down the street with a secret past. One of the MANY ways in which Star Wars episodes I-III failed is that I don't identify with someone who's a rebellious slave, or the teenaged ruler of their own country and/or planet¹. ¹ Except in that all teenagers think they are the ruler of their own country and/or planet and...

And a fellow would know that his darling/ Had heard ev'ry word of his song

This is another one of those posts that probably only one of my readers will understand and/or care about, but here goes. In the song "J'en ai marre" by Alizée: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVlrqTw7wjM There's a section of the chorus that goes: J'en ai marre de ces cyniques Et dans les prĂ©s les colchiques J'en ai marre d'en avoir marre Aussi (I'm fed up with these cynics And the flowers in the prairies And I'm fed up with being fed up Too) The song is about Alizée listing off all the million different things she's sick of, and talking about how she's only...

Don't even get me started about Dearth Voider

You all need to go vote for the new USPS Star Wars stamp. The reasons are severalfold: First, when the stamps come out, my love for Star Wars will force me to buy sheets and sheets of them. Emperor Palpatine is winning right now, and I don't really want to stick his wrinkly face on all of my correspondence. Second, and more offensive, they have identified him on the voting website as "The Emporer" (see screenshot above). Everyone, please go vote for Han and Chewie just to get this egregious spelling aberration off the Intarnest. ETA: I have just looked...

I can't even describe how weird it was to watch the Rose Bowl Parade on Monday and see hundreds of Star Wars stormtroopers marching in formation. It was like The Empire had taken over Pasadena. It was awesome and it was weird and I thought it was totally cool and I was kind of embarrassed that I thought that. As with all the weird-ass Oklahoma floats that were there for no reason (go have your own parade, Oklahoma, and get out of ours!), there was no connection to the Rose Bowl - it was just a chance for people to...

Jedi Poo-doo!

Mince!

'I thought they smelled bad on the outside!'

Why is it that George Lucas will go back into his old movies and fiddle with things that don't need to be fiddled with, needlessly changing the fact that HAN SHOT FIRST, adding silly dinosaurs to the background of scenes, and inserting Stupid McWhinersen where Sebastian Shaw should be, but he won't go back and change the ridiculous stop-actiony way that tauntauns run? I'm pretty sure that the gravity on Hoth is the same on any other planet in the Star Wars movies. I saw Han walk through the snow and I saw Luke fall from the ceiling and both...

'So... love has blinded you?'

I only saw Star Wars: Episode III once in the theater. That was enough for me - it finished things off and gave me some closure to the nightmare that was the Star Wars prequels. But then Katie linked to something that brought it all rushing back to me: 91 Reasons to Hate Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith WHAT? Only 91? I think I've linked to the Reasons to Hate guides for the earlier prequel episodes before, but this is the first that I've seen of this one. It goes through the movie chronologically, annotating with the...

Frankly, Georgie, I don't give a damn

On Tuesday, we watched the American Film Institute's special 100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes. The show had clips from various famous actors, writers and directors including Star Wars destroyer director George Lucas, whose chin and neck have recently combined and expanded to make him look like a manatee. I always wondered where he got the idea for some of his characters and have now come to realize that he's not that creative after all - he was just looking in the mirror....

I just want to make Yoda's Toes cookies!

George Lucas has whored Star Wars out to everything else, so why can't I find some damned Star Wars cookie cutters in this town? If you have Star Wars Cheez-Its™ and a wookiee with a lollipop growing out of his head and Lucas Crazy Hair, why can't I find some boring old cookie cutters? Required reading... and viewing

I realized today that there are certain things that should be a prerequisite for anyone hoping to be "in" with srahfamily*. Srahfamily is, of course, the coolest family on earth and everyone wants to be "in" with them. But first you must understand the organizational culture by way of its cultural artifacts!**. 'You are on this council, but we do not grant you the title of Master.' 'What? Hells no, biatch!'

Srahfamily sat around the TV this evening and sacrificed our souls and our eyes through fifteen minutes of The O.C. in order to catch the Star Wars: Episode III (I've forgotten the title of this piece of garbage) trailer. From what I can tell, this episode in the series is going to be a tale of disappointment. Obi-Wan's disappointment that Anakin is not The Chosen One Who Will Bring Balance To The Force. Anakin's disappointment that he's not made a Jedi Master. Samuel L. Jackson's disappointment that he's gonna die. And, of course, last but not least, your disappointment and...

Will somebody get this scantily-clad carpet out of my way?!

StarWars.com, a site which I certainly do not have in my RSS feeds and do not read daily updates from, has posted an article about Hasbro's recent release of the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith action figures. "This mighty Wookiee warrior comes with a blaster, a bandolier, a helmet and a base." This mighty Wookiee warrior also seems to come with some kind of armoured loincloth. It's very strange that an armoured loincloth would have been invented or that a Wookiee would wear such a garment, but it's even stranger when you consider that Chewbacca never wore...

Rot in Hell, Lucas!!!!1

From an article about FURTHER changes made to the original trilogy: But the most noticeable change -- and perhaps one some "Star Wars" diehards will have a tough time stomaching -- is Hayden Christensen (who plays young Anakin in the prequel trilogy) now appearing in the scene where the "force ghosts" of Anakin, Obi Wan, and Yoda smile at Luke. - Five major changes in the 'Star Wars' DVD You bet I'll have a tough time stomaching it, you freaking mus-tards. 'Ici tout est... doux... et lisse...'

In case you were curious, Attaque des Clones is just as rotten as Attack of the Clones. Anakin Skywalker is just as awful and creepy (perhaps moreso, speaking French whilst leering), Jar Jar Binks was just as annoying, and I still hate hate hate George Lucas. On the other hand, I did learn how to say "bounty hunter" in French: un chasseur de prime. And seriously, when you are learning valuable vocabulary like that, who cares if the movie sucks? I do. The voice of God compels you... to study French culture

Went to Albion to hear James Earl Jones last night. It was like he was Dr. Guenin-Lelle with a much deeper voice, because he seemed to be teaching my Freshman Seminar. His topic was Culture. PT opened up by saying that James Earl Jones sounded more like he imagined the voice of God than anyone he'd ever heard. I'm sure it's a common belief, but it scared me because it sounded like Uncle Pete had been reading my blog. Albion gave him an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters before his speech. "When do I get my honorary doctorate?" I asked...

We are going to see James Earl Jones tomorrow night at Albion. My mother says he sounds like God, although I don't know how she knows that. Those lucky Albion students. They don't know how good they have it, with their James Earl Jones on campus and their Baldwin food cooked for them. Why, when they're old like me and have to worry about feeding themselves, they'll wish they were back at Albion, with their Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and their free Internet access. Dumb srah brought her CD player to work but no CDs

I have just discovered (I think I knew before but forgot) that my mom owns the 2-CD set of the soundtrack to A New Hope. I love the Binary Sunset part. Aw, I love the whole thing. I wonder how much of Star Wars' popularity is due to the music. Speaking of A New Hope, I've been wondering since Sunday - is Princess Leia's title a hereditary one or an elected position? Was she elected Princess of Alderaan or did Bail Organa go from being a senator to being a king? How's that going to work?...

Attack of the Clones? More like... Attack of the Bong!

Heh heh. Title has nothing to do with anything, except Gobie on SNL. Yup, so we went to see it this weekend. We took the French archives intern with us, so when they were making comments about the Jedi Archives and things like that, we were making archives-jokes and our row was laughing when no one else was. Heh heh. Family full of archives dorks. I liked it! I agree with the Free Press that the romantic scenes were painfully bad, but there was a lot to enjoy in there, especially for the geeks. Your average Star Wars watcher

Your average Star Wars watcher might only know Bib Fortuna as "Jabba's butler with snakes coming out of his head", whereas fans can recognize people like him and Boba Fett (even before Han Solo calls him by name in Return of the Jedi), know that Greedo is a Rodian, and know what a Twiilek is (oh god, I have just outed myself as an enormous dork, but I swear - my dad and sister are worse). Why the Star Wars I-III Trilogy Does Not Work

Why the Star Wars I-III Trilogy Does Not Work as Well as the IV-VI Trilogy (a Five Minute Thought On the Way to Women And Art Class): - No one (or at least not me) would think to call Star Wars IV "the introduction one" or V "the romance one" or VI "the one with the big battle". I think that oversimplifying and telling us what to expect is dumb. In the original trilogy, they ALL had big battles. They ALL had romance. - They ALL had entertaining creatures that spoke foreign languages instead of strangely-accented English. If you know...

Last night Alex and I

Last night Alex and I watched Star Wars: A New Hope and I fell asleep. Shame on me. The Special Edition definitely has better sound quality, although you have to put up with a lot of silly additions for it. Watching the first scene with the ship appearing from the top of the screen made me think that Star Wars movies belong in a theatre. I miss Norris 101 movies. Monsters, Inc. was fun

Monsters, Inc. was fun and entertaining. I quite enjoyed myself, even though I've never seen a Pixar film before. The Pixar short before the movie was hilarious, too. But let's skip to the important part: the previews. There were precisely three million hours of previews. Ice Age sounded stupid when I first heard about it, but after having seen the preview, I want to go see it. It looks like a fun Disney movie. I think Disney is trying to move away from musicals, which is too bad in a way because they seemed to be the only institution of...
