Cute doctors: doctors who are cute

There have been rumors this week that George Clooney was spotted around town, scouting a location for an upcoming movie. None of these rumors seem to include any reports of anyone actually talking to this supposed George Clooney, though, so the cynical part of me thinks that it was probably just a guy who looked kind of like George, or maybe a well-groomed Bigfoot. It would not be totally unheard of for a movie to be filmed here, and if it turned out to be true, it would be the most exciting celebrity sighting since I did or did not...

I will comfort you/ I'll take your part

If I had thought of this earlier (and if I were sure there wasn't anything potentially illegal about it), I would have liked to volunteer (or organize an army of volunteers) to be a line-proxy for the elderly and infirm (or heck, maybe just anyone!) in high-population areas, so that they could take breaks to go to the bathroom, or eat or sit down. It's been sad to read about people for whom even the early-voting lines were too long, especially since turnout was unexpectedly high (at least compared to past years) and so people weren't prepared enough to vote...

Summertime... and the parkin' is easy...

Summer is held at the wrong time of year. In Srahtown in the summer, there is suddenly an abundance of parking available. You can arrive late and still get a good spot. You can leave during the day, come back and park in the same spot... or a better one! It is glorious! Vive l'été! This is not the case the rest of the year. The rest of the year, there are fierce battles over parking spaces, with shivs and chains and tridents and suchlike. Academics in their tweed jackets and elbow patches hold their Very Academic Pipes in one...

'I've taken this boat many places. Miami. Tokyo. Denver.'

I had a whole lot of stuff to write about my wonderful trip to San Francisco (a bajillion years ago) and the not-so-wonderful travel in order to get there, but there's just too much to say and not enough time to write it all. I will try to do it bit by bit rather than writing it all in one go, and return to the land of the blogging. Jday, you win! Thursday, March 20 I set off for the airport several hours early, with the idea that as long as I was going for a long drive to the...

Say hello to Bono and Sandra Day O'Connor!

("Those are the stupidest fist names I've ever heard.") Danny boy, don't be afraid, to shake that ass, and misbehave Danny boy, I know you got time, but what are you waiting for, Anyway the dust may just blow away, if you wait for a windy day But you may find the chance has passed you by; - "Sewn" by The Feeling, who are probably slightly more Irish than the author of "Danny Boy" because at least they've been to Ireland before There is a yearly tradition associated with Srahtown and The University I Work At, wherein local bars start...

And we walked in the snow with no shoes, because we couldn't afford shoes, because it was a Recession.

Let me tell you sonny... let me tell you straight You kids today ain't never had it tough Always had everything handed to you on a silver plate You lazy brats think nothing's good enough Well, nobody ever drove me to school when it was ninety degrees below We had to walk buck naked through forty miles of snow Worked in the coal mines twenty-two hours a day for just half a cent Had to sell my internal organs just to pay the rent - Weird Al Yankovic, "When I Was Your Age" Have I ever mentioned that I am...

Srahnanas in Pyjamas are shopping at the store/ Srahnanas in Pyjamas go down in Srahtown lore

As I was leaving work one day this week, I promised to bring in brownies the next day, as some of my officemates had a big deadline the next day and I had a new recipe idea I wanted to try out. I went home, changed into pyjamas, puttered around a while making dinner and surfing the Internet, then went to start the brownies. Then I realized that I had used all of my eggs last weekend and that I was going to have to go out and buy more. I weighed the situation. I could change into street clothes...

This is an outrage!

I wanted an egg salad sandwich, so while out running errands on my lunch hour, I swung by The Place Uptown That Sells Egg Salad Sandwiches. Unfortunately there was no parking available anywhere near TPUTSESS so after driving around the block three times, I gave up and bought an egg salad sandwich from the student center cafeteria. It was half as expensive, but not half as good as the egg salad sandwich from TPUTSESS (and I would have gotten a pickle from TPUTSESS!). If the economy of Srahtown comes to a crashing halt because I'm not supporting it with expensive-but-delicious...

Now on the sidewalk - ooh, sunny morning, uh huh - lies a body, just oozin' life

Question: Would it kill somebody to shovel the sidewalks in this godforsaken town? Follow-up question: If so, who would that "somebody" be? Can we just take a moment to consider whether his/her life is as valuable as me not slipping on the sidewalk and having warm, dry feet¹? I am thinking that - unless the "somebody" is me - my feet are probably going to win out. Ready the torches and pitchforks, everyone! ¹ I forgot to put on my boots when I went to class today².² :(...

I like where I are/ When I can, find my car

I am apparently senile. This morning I walked out the door to go to work, looked out at the parking lot and discovered my car was not there. I momentarily freaked out. I had just been talking to my Arabic professor this week about how what little crime there is in Srahtown usually consists of crimes of opportunity, and how I've managed to avoid anything so far by a) not getting drunk, b) not being out on the streets at 3am, when all of these incidents seem to occur and c) locking my doors. Now here I was, being so...

Thank U India

Some things that srah likes: things that are Indianthings that are cheap and/or free It has been a good week to be srah! The University I Work At's Office of Employee Health and Well-Being has come through again! Although their toning classes conflict with my Arabic schedule, they're now offering Indian Classical Dance classes on Thursdays from 12:10 to 12:40. I have been to one session and - as I'm sure you can guess - I am ready to go on stage and perform professionally any day now. In reality, I don't think half an hour a week is going...

A wife of seventeen? You shall find me a wife of a thousand...

For once, this is a message that I just sent, rather than an open letter on my blog going out into the void. Dear CNN Money, Your article "Where the singles are" might have been more interesting and effective if it had taken into account the ages of the singles in the towns listed. For example, I'm sure that [Srahtown] is a great place to be an 18-21 year old single (about 66% of the population of the town is 18-24) but as a 27 year old in that town, it isn't quite as glamorous. I noticed that most of...

I had a nightmare last night where I found another Chinese restaurant in srahtown. It's not that I dislike Chinese food - it's just that Chinese and Mexican are all the "ethnic" food we've got in town and I think we could stand to diversify. I was driving around srahtown with my family and kept finding all of these stores and restaurants that I think are standard for srahtown in my dreams, although they don't exist in real life. In my dreams, srahtown seems to be an old-timey Wild West town that is going to be a ghost town at...

'He reminds me of my father.' 'Was your father ugly?'

Before I set out on my walk tonight, I went through my purse and decided what to throw into my backpack. Wallet, since I didn't know which direction I was going to go and I might need to buy something to drink in this heat.Cell phone, mostly so I could call people while I walk and forget that I'm walking.Keys to get in and out of my apartment.Camera... I never know whether to bring my camera, because it's extra weight that I don't need to carry but on the other hand, I always seem to need it when I don't...

Did you troy the pline cike?

It's going to take me a while to tell you all about my weekend in DC, but in the meantime I will give you a short post to tide you over: I am very boring and like plain cake doughnuts the best. Powdered sugar gets everywhere and chokes you when you inhale it. Glazed doughnuts are sticky. Doughnuts with filling explode all over you, and the cavity in the middle is never exactly centered, which bothers srah more than it should. The doughnut shop in Srahtown only sells glazed doughnuts. It makes srah sad and fits into her assertion that...

Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem

On the subject of visits to medical professionals, I recently went to the dentist. I have seen a lot of my dentist in the last year or so, what with the fact that I kind of sort of put off going to the dentist for almost two years when I moved here. In the almost two years between cleanings, I developed cavities in all four quadrants of my mouth, so I've had four appointments for fillings in the last six months. And now cleaning time has rolled around again and she found a few more cavities to fill. I think...

... and a little clap!

Every time I walk past the building they're renovating uptown, I scrunch my eyes closed¹ and wish as hard as I can that it will be an Indian restaurant, or maybe sushi or falafel. Sure, all the rumors are that it's a third Chinese restaurant, but I keep thinking that if I wish hard enough, it will be transformed. Clap if you believe in Indian restaurants, children! ¹ This is poetic license. If I actually closed my eyes, I would get hit by a car, because the Chinese Indian restaurant is right by the corner....

I say vote yes! (Sit down, srah)

I tripped off to the polling place today, buoyant with excitement at the prospect of My Very Own First Electronic Voting Experience. I walked down the road (for a nice 1500 or so steps each way), went up to the Precinct 3 table and gave them my name and ID. They informed me that I wasn't on their list and that judging by the road I live on, I was supposed to be at the Srahtown Township table rather than Srahtown Precinct 3. This was a bit of a surprise, as I'd always had the impression I was inside the...

Ohhhh, huggy hugs

On 30 Rock this week, Tina Fey's character bonded with another single 30-something woman over their common fear of choking and dying alone in their apartments and not being discovered until their neighbor's dog starts sniffing and scratching at the door. Bridget Jones had a similar fear of dying alone and being eaten by alsatians¹. I am not 30-something, but - as an inveterate worrier, I also have plenty of these fears. When I hear scary scary reports about rabies on NPR, I start thinking, "What will I do when I am inevitably attacked by rabid wild animals?" When I...

If you build it, they will come... FOR YOUR SOUL

On my way to the airport last week, I drove through the farmland that is The Area Between Srahtown and Cincinnati. There is a stoplight in the middle of nowhere, and the corn on either side of the road has grown so that it was much higher than my car and came right up to the sides of the road. As I sat there at the light with no cars around in either direction and the corn closing in around me, I thought, 'I could be eaten by space aliens or the 1919 Chicago White Sox right now and no...

If only I could harness this power to fuel the damned car

'And if it comes back the very next day, then I'll understand'

I got 5 pieces of mail yesterday. None of them were for me and none of them had the same address as another. It is as though my mail carrier got to my mailbox and thought "I'm sick of delivering mail. This girl can have it all!" Strangely enough, one of the pieces is addressed to a church and another to the Kingdom Hall down the road. Do I look like a religious organization to you? Then why the heck am I paying taxes? In regard to the title of this post, I hate hate hate that song even more...

The most fearsome vehicular menace of all

Seen today in Town I Live In: A mime driving a car. It reminded me of the Animaniacs "Good Idea/Bad Idea" sketches. Good idea: driving a car. Bad idea: driving a car full of man-eating badgers. Unfortunately, this mime didn't appear to be being eaten. Maybe next mime. Update: Ooops. The host of "Good Idea/Bad Idea" was Skullhead Boneyhands, not the mime. What did the mime do?...

We're having a crime wave... a tropical crime wave

I haven't blogged much lately - this is about 33% due to the fact that I went away last weekend and didn't have access to my email for both of it and 33% due to the fact that I just got My First Internet but I also got TV and haven't hooked up the wireless router yet. As I must now spend all of my time glued to American Idol and Beauty and the Geek, that doesn't leave much time for being glued to the computer in the office. The other 34% is that I keep meaning to blog something...

Small Town America?

Once upon a time, several months ago, I heard two girls speaking French in Kroger and turned around and looked at them. Frenchies in the Town I Live In (TILI)! Only one of them really made an impression, and I think it's because she looks familiar but I can't put my finger on who she resembles. I saw the same girl walking down the street later that day. I've seen her maybe once or twice around town in the past couple of months, but things have picked up again. I noticed her Friday night when she walked past the coffee...

In which my neighbor makes an honest woman of me

Remember all that delicious Internet I was stealing? Well now, two and a half months later, it's all come to an end. It was working fine at the beginning of the week, but since about Wednesday, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! I can't hear myself think because half of my brain is trying to eavesdrop on the two girls speaking French across the room! Anyway, since about Wednesday I haven't been able to connect. I think my Internetful neighbor has moved away. How I'll miss him! So this weekend I'm off to the Cable Modem Store to buy a cable modem (I tried eBay...

This place is weird, #315 in a series

When I went home for lunch today, there were two people riding horses down the sidewalk on my street. I had to wait for them to pass so that I could turn into my parking lot. By the time I parked the car and could have gotten my camera out, they were out of view. Alas!...

I wish the Ice Man would goeth

Sorry I haven't blogged recently. My fingers have been frozen to various metallic objects. For verily, I hath movèd into the freezing rain belt, between Dayton's snow and Cincinnati's rain. Or maybe it's the other way around. Either way, we're in the middle and we get iced upon. The good thing about living in this weather is that after you've finished scraping your car out from under the layer of ice, you have the makings of a delicious sno-cone! The bad thing about living in this weather is that I lied about the first part and there is no good...
