Long ago in days of yore/ It all began with a god named Thor/ There were Vikings and boats/ And some plans for a furniture store

I went to IKEA today to look for a particular object (I'd tell you what, but it's a Christmas present). It's the first time that I've ever done this, as I usually go to IKEA and end up browsing through the whole store, but this time we arrived an hour before closing and weren't sure whether to look in the "kitchen and dining" area or the "cooking and eating" area of the stores, which are on two different floors. I went to the cooking/eating area first, but couldn't find the object anywhere. So I asked two IKEA employees where to...

Who can take a blanket, sprinkle it with sleeves, price it fifty dollars, then sell it off to me? The Slanket Man can...

One of my guilty pleasures when I fly is reading the SkyMall catalogue. It's not because there's any actual shopping that I want to do, but more because I'm amazed by the range of things that other people are - apparently - willing to buy. I've always considered the target audience for SkyMall to be "OCD hypochondriacs who are really obsessed with their pets, have more money than they know what to do with and whose children hate them." That said, I really want a Slanket. Frangela say(s) they rock! And they are even more desirable after this recent conversation...

Dream

It's been a while since I've posted about a dream, but I remembered so much detail from this one I had to record it! I dreamt last night that I was living with my college roommate in a one-room apartment somewhere in a town near water (in my dream it was still Srahtown, but Srahtown happened to be near water). The apartment was all one room, but it was very large, so I guess it was more of a loft. Is that what a loft is? For some reason even though we had all this space, we still had our...

All the decisions have to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs...

I have been eating a lot of peanut butter this week. This can mean only one of two things: My body is telling me, "Sarah, we¹ need more protein! We will make you crave peanut butter so that you will put more protein in us!" OR My body is telling me, "Sarah, you bought peanut butter on impulse at the store last week. Why did you waste money on peanut butter when you don't even like peanut butter? We have to use that stuff up!" I don't know why my body is so concerned with my spending habits. ¹ My...

Dream

I dreamt last night that I sort-of-accidentally bought a terrible, terrible used car. I went to this dealership and basically bought the car based on looking briefly at a picture of it. Then the guy took me out to the car (which was a 1959 Harrington, or some such made up car name) and discovered that the part where the pedals were was open on top, so that your feet would get all wet. Also, I had no idea if it actually ran. But I had already signed something so the guy wouldn't let me back out of buying it....

We need a little Christmas right this very minute soonish

I placed an order on Amazon.com December 1st. I only waited as long as the 1st because I wanted to make all of my purchases at once, so as to be eligible for the Free Super Saver Shipping. It seemed like a good day, though. It certainly wasn't last-minute, but I wasn't making my Christmas purchases in August, either. By the 1st I had a pretty good idea of what I needed to buy online vs in the store, so I made my purchase. When I was done, I checked the order online and saw that the estimated delivery date...

It is time to buy/ A t-shirt for little srah/ Refrigerator

My favorite Threadless t-shirt design has been reprinted: Non sequiturs and haiku, together in one shirt? HURRAH! Now I just need to scrape together some cash that I can justify spending on a t-shirt. The justification is the tricky point. I am sure that I deserve a present for some reason or another. P.S. I am totally just posting this in the hopes that you will go to the site, buy a t-shirt and get me referral points so that I won't have to pay for my t-shirt at all. It is a clever scheme. Keep in mind that you...

An important treatise on grocery shoppi-- let's ride bikes!

Why is it that Kroger's is always having sales on things I need, but it turns out to be ridiculous sales like 10 half-gallons of milk for $10? Who needs 10 half-gallons of milk? Who has room to store 10 half-gallons of milk? Who can drink 10 half-gallons of milk before they go bad? Do the McCaugheys live around here? Yes, I would like a sale on canned mushrooms or ice cream or something, but 10 pints of ice cream for $10? Yeah, maybe if I only ate ice cream for every meal, I could... mmmm, ice cream for every...

I think that I shall never see an Ikea løveli as a tree

Ikea is stalking me. First one opens up miles from my home town, and now one's opening up miles from my current home. I picture myself as a sort of Johnny Äppleseed, leaving a trail of Ikeas wherever I pause long enough. I wonder if I could put that on my resume. I have yet to see one for myself, though!...

... and she sat on the third one and it was juuuuust riiiiiiight. And then she was eaten by bears.

I went sofa/loveseat shopping this evening at Ringel's, the furniture MEGAPALOOZA in downtown Hamilton (H to the M to the I-L town, if you want to say that, which I don't). Ringel's is so big that you have to be guided by a salesperson at all times. They'll operate the elevator and take you to one or more of the seven floors, depending on what you're looking for. Then they'll turn on the lights (since the lights are apparently turned off when no one's on the floor) and show you around that floor. Based on a visit to the second...

Short women of the world: rise up and shop!

Cheryl and I went shopping in Cincinnati this weekend. One of the stores we stopped in was Petite Sophisticate, which is where I bought both of my suits and recently opened my Very First Store Credit Card a few months ago. Of course, as soon as I get on board, I discover that the chain is going out of business. At least I got a 45%-off sweater out of the deal. It's pretty frustrating, though, to see the closing of one of the few stores out there that caters specifically to Our Kind. It's hard to find clothing that fits...

I would buy me a green dress (but not this here green dress - that's cruel)

I went to the mall last night to shop for a dress for a wedding this weekend, a top to wear under my suits, navy blue shoes, a navy purse and a black purse. But mostly the dress. The problem was, I couldn't concentrate on one thing, because I had all these other secondary purchases that I wanted to make as well. So I had to visit every store and every department for anything that I might be interested in buying. As my time at the mall went on, it started to fill up with teenaged girls in skimpy tank...

These shoes were made for buying, so that's just what I'll do

Cletus: "Hey Brandine, you might could wear these to your job interview."Brandine: "And scuff up the topless dancin' runway? Naw, you best bring em back where from ya got 'em."Cletus: (tosses the boots back on the telephone line) "Back you go, to wait for a woman of less discriminatin' taste." I bought a new (navy blue, which my mom says is best for looking professional) suit for my job interviews. Alas, I have no shoes to match, so it looks like I'll have to buy another pair. Sigh. Life is so difficult, having to get shoes all the time and...

There's always hijinks when Cheryl's in town!

My friends and I often play a game called "I'm Going To Buy This For You." This game can be played in a variety of locations; I remember playing it in anything from a clothing store to a china/gift shop to an art museum. It consists of inflicting the worst possible destiny on your friends, and therefore appeals to me and my friends. We have close, loving relationships in which we always wish the best for each other, so if we see something like a rainbow-striped sweater with a huge cartoon skunk on it, we kindly offer to purchase it...

Caution: girly post ahead

I stopped by the drugstore today on my way to work. The clerk there was very personable and chatty, which I would have appreciated if I hadn't gone into the drugstore with the express purpose of buying... erm... feminine products. When I am making this kind of purchase, I want to buy my things and go - no conversation, no eye contact. There are few products out there that can give a cashier so much insight into your life. I don't necessarily want my friends to know about the details of my cycle, much less a strange, overly chatty cashier....

Disco inferno!

We set the alarm for 9am, but didn't manage to get going until a while later. We ate breakfast and took turns showering. While Nico was having his turn, the TV was on and there was this Belgian documentary on the Saturday morning kid's programming, all about blogs. If the sound had been on, I'm sure it would have been even more amusing! In the morning, Becky and I went shopping together while Nico busied himself with less girly pursuits. Well, I imagine. I don't actually know what he was doing, so he could have been getting his legs waxed...

I feel pretty... oh so pretty...

I went shopping with the Urstodian today. She needed to go to Target, so I took her, intending to be only the chauffeur. Ursula needed socks, so we went to the sock section. She immediately picked up some socks. I, on the other hand, pored over the hosiery selection and oohed and ahhed over socks and tights and things. I ended up picking up a pair of pink "modal" knee socks. What is a "modal" knee sock? What is modal about knee socks? I have no idea. Why would I need pink socks if I don't have pink clothing? I...

Hooray! Now I can hate me on the bus!

After months of planning and stalling, srah finally gets around to going to buy a cell phone. Our scene takes place at the AT&T Wireless store at the mall. (approaches counter) AT&T Wireless Dude: Can I help you? srah: Yes. I would like a cell phone. (Rolls eyes, realizing that she is in a cell phone store. Continues.) AT&T Wireless Dude: Alright, what are you looking for? srah: I know exactly what I want because I tried to buy a phone on your website, but it's completely unusable so I couldn't. (Dies a little on the inside, realizing how SI...

Librovore

That may or may not mean someone who eats scales. I don't know any Latin. I spent a large part of our trip shopping for, buying, and reading books in English. Between my London-Paris and Paris-Vichy train rides today (6.5 total hours of travel time), I managed to polish off two of them. I am quite pleased with my new acquisitions: Beggars Banquet (the latest Ian Rankin), Mother Tongue and Notes from a Big Country (now that I have full collections of Rankin and Brookmyre, my latest victim is Bill Bryson), Talking to Addison (recommended by Cheryl because the author...

My So-Called Life (9.10.02)

My life is so rich and full of excitement. I am actually rather pleased about the construction that is going on at Monoprix, my local supermarket. They are redoing everything, it seems, because every time I go there (which is every day - I have a rich and exciting life and nothing better to do than go to Monoprix every day), everything has moved. It's actually rather impressive how impossible they've made it to find things from one day to the next. Yesterday I was lucky enough to be blocked in while they were dragging a whole shelf to a...
