You say oyster and I say erster¹

I was surprised, as we started our descent into Houston, to see lots and lots of forests of green trees. Everything I know about Texas I learned from the movies, so I expected it to be all brown and sandy with little scrubby bushes, rather than huge forests of green trees. I expected it to be more like the Australian Outback, which I am also very familiar with from my vast experience of... watching The Thorn Birds miniseries once. Also, I didn't see Rock Hudson or James Dean or even Sal Mineo. All of my lifetime experience with Texas (2.5...

Everyone involved in the creation of this film must walk the plank!

I have been trying to blog about Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest for almost a week now, but I have been so ENRAGED with RAGE that it... flames... flames, on the side of my face. Heaving... heaving breaths... Well, I think I am mostly sort of cooled off enough to write about it now, but hopefully not too cool to express to you my RAGE. Sometimes I worry that the dorkiness running through my veins is so thick I'm going to get blood clots and have a nerdeurysm....

Ye'll walk the plank, ye scurvy dogs!

To celebrate Becky's birthday, we went to see Pirates of the Caribbean again. Watching all of the credits like a true member of my family, I found my calling: pirate dialect coach. Not a dialect coach for pirates in movies, of course, nor dialect coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates. I'll sail the seven seas, teaching novice pirates to sound more authentic. In other news, I decided I was tired because I was dehydrated, so I've been drinking vast (avast!) amounts of water today. It hasn't helped so far, so I've decided that since I can't remember the last time I...

A pirate must indulge a little pardonable swagger

I saw my pirate movie last night. Sigh... It was lovely. There are movies that make me laugh, but my face returns to a neutral movie-watching face after that. This is one of the few that makes me grin. Tho' I'm sure Legolas had something to do with that. Mmmmm. Pirates are wonderful. If I can be very nerdy for a moment, I think I like them because they have such interesting language. They have muddled, strange accents from being on boats with a mix of people, and they have a vocabulary all their own. I am so going to...
