It's been over a week since The Collective invited readers to be interviewed. I asked for questions then forgot about it for a while, but here - at last - are my answers to their questions. From Jennie!: 1) Why does Ohio insist on throwing more snow at us? Why? From heather! anne!: 2) What is the all-time best Christmas movie? The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. It makes me tear up every time I see Imogene taking her earrings out to look more like Mary, or hear that Leroy left the ham behind for the Baby Jesus. "It's a present....

It's going to take me a while to tell you all about my weekend in DC, but in the meantime I will give you a short post to tide you over: I am very boring and like plain cake doughnuts the best. Powdered sugar gets everywhere and chokes you when you inhale it. Glazed doughnuts are sticky. Doughnuts with filling explode all over you, and the cavity in the middle is never exactly centered, which bothers srah more than it should. The doughnut shop in Srahtown only sells glazed doughnuts. It makes srah sad and fits into her assertion that...
This I Believe (At the Moment)

NPR has an ongoing series called "This I Believe" where people share their important beliefs. I've often thought about that segment and what I would say if I were featured on the show. Unfortunately, I've never been able to settle on one theme for very long. And I am also not very good at taking things seriously. So I bring you: This I Believe (At the Moment) I believe that the highest point in the history of recorded sound was when Johnny Mathis recorded "Chances Are." Whatever the motivations were for inventing sound recording technology, they were ultimately satisfied when...

When my out-of-town guests and I were planning out this weekend, I had a few ideas of things to do, but the only thing they were firm on was seeing Big Butter Jesus: I have lived here for a year and a half and while I've read about the giant 60-foot Big Butter Jesus/Drowning Jesus/Touchdown Jesus in Monroe that scares drivers along I-75, I hadn't actually had a reason to drive through that area and see it for myself. So we all discovered it for the first time together this morning. There's no time like Sunday morning for finding Jesus!...

Smoke-free Ohio

I was very conflicted on Issue 5 in this election: a proposed smoking ban to affect all bars, restaurants and other public places in Ohio. On one hand, I felt like a statewide ban was really strong, and preferred to leave it up to individual establishments to decide whether they wanted non-smokers' business. On the other hand, I don't want to breathe the stuff. All in all, I was just glad that it was on the ballot because it was really making people think about smoking. This was the only thing on the entire ballot that I had any real...

Yesterday I walked to the library as part of my HIGHEST STEPCOUNT DAY EVER. On the way there, another pedestrian passing in the other direction said, "Great shirt." I looked down and saw that I was wearing a Michigan sweatshirt. Ah, a fellow Wolverines fan! When I got to the library to pick up the books I had on reserve, the clerk said, "I don't know if I should give these to you." I thought, 'What have I done? Do I have enormous fines I don't know about? Did I reserve porn??' She continued, "... wearing that shirt." Aha! A...

Seen yesterday whilst pursuing my HIGHEST STEPCOUNT DAY EVER: Many people have suggested that lowering gas prices is a ploy by the GOP to entice people to vote Republican this November. I, myself, do not think Oh my, such good prices on gas! Thank you, Ken Blackwell! Clearly the price of this gas is thanks to YOU! Here is my vote!. Who does that? If that's actually the case, then I'm mostly just disgusted that the Republican party thinks so poorly of us. I will take my cheap gas, thank you, and drive to the polling location where I will...

Ikea is stalking me. First one opens up miles from my home town, and now one's opening up miles from my current home. I picture myself as a sort of Johnny Äppleseed, leaving a trail of Ikeas wherever I pause long enough. I wonder if I could put that on my resume. I have yet to see one for myself, though!...

Reasons why Michigan is better than Ohio: When the two states almost went to war over the city of Toledo, Ohio got that city and Michigan got the WHOLE Upper Peninsula and all of the lovely copper therein. And Toledo is basically more Michigan than Ohio anyway, so Michigan won altogether.Michigan produces a lot of delicious fruit.Wolverines are fierce and tenacious; buckeyes are poisonous nuts.Say what you will about the state of our largest city and about our crappy roads, but at least in Michigan, I've never heard anyone request Poke Salad Annie on the radio¹. Poke Salad Annie is...

Actually, come to think of it, I don't remember seeing any of the other contestants. Or any cameras. This is the worst reality show ever! Well, that ate two hours out of my life. Actually, it ate a lot more, if you count all the time I spent thinking about food when I was supposed to be fasting 10-12 hours before the test. And if...

I went shopping on Sunday, as I am wont to do but don't want to do¹. At 4pm, every television in the mall turned to the Bengals game. I don't just mean that they turned to the game in electronics stores or in bar/grills within the malls. I mean that when I was taking a break from the Hell That Is Holiday Shopping (and Gaucho Pants) by playing I'm Going To Buy This For You/Shopping For a Dress For a Wedding I Already Went To in the formalwear section in Dillards, the TVs in that section that usually show music...

Sorry I haven't blogged recently. My fingers have been frozen to various metallic objects. For verily, I hath movèd into the freezing rain belt, between Dayton's snow and Cincinnati's rain. Or maybe it's the other way around. Either way, we're in the middle and we get iced upon. The good thing about living in this weather is that after you've finished scraping your car out from under the layer of ice, you have the makings of a delicious sno-cone! The bad thing about living in this weather is that I lied about the first part and there is no good...

I walked through the student union today to get a cup of tea and passed a table advertising an upcoming CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT. I tried to hold in the laughter and ended up making a face much like those made by the Roman guards when Pontius Pilate told them about his friend Biggus. Honestly, these Ohioans and their cornoling. You can't drive 50 feet in this area without seeing some farm advertising pumpkin picking and cornholes. I... I just... I can't... say... I... There are no words. </maturity>...
