Next week, on the twentieth of May, I proclaim 'Liza Doolittle Day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YJSTEHTSug I have not yet decided what this will entail. Possibly speaking in a painful Cockney accent, taking a bath for the first time ever, or eating lots of chocolates and going for rides in taxis. Perhaps I will pass myself off as a duchess at an Embassy Ball, dance dance dance all night, fill my mouth with marbles or just have a cup-a-tayyyyy. Maybe I will cut off my elocution teacher's head! I invite you all to celebrate in your own way!...

I saw My Fair Lady last night at the Croswell Opera House in Adrian. It was okay, except the orchestra STANK as usual (if anyone in charge of decision-making is out there, either raise some money to hire professional musicians or get some canned music, because this crap really takes away from the rest of the performance) and no one could handle any accent. I think that's the most important part of My Fair Lady. If Eliza doesn't have a convincing Cockney accent, Freddy doesn't sound upper-class enough, Alfie Doolittle has a southern-US accent and even Henry Higgins can't talk...

Katie's Musical Trivia Quote made me put the My Fair Lady soundtrack on. Ah, Rex Harrison. 'Enry 'Iggins is such a prescriptive grammarian. Or a prescriptive phoneticist or something. He's pretty much just a jerk. Does anyone know if he was like that in Pygmalion? I've never read it, but I've seen the movie. Mmm, Leslie Howard. Leslie Howard played Ashley Wilkes in Gone With the Wind. What an unfortunate pair of androgynous first names....
