I woulda called him Bill.

I am Without Computer at the moment. I could have been Without Computer for a whole lot more moments if I had actually wanted to go through the hassle of getting a computer loan through The University I Work At, which would have meant that the university would pay for my computer, then take it out of my paycheck little by little, interest-free, over the course of 3-36 months (depending on how I set it up). This would have been the logical, rational approach to take. In fact, it is the logical, rational approach I probably should have taken sometime...

Catching up with srah

I'm not keeping up so well with the blogging, since I don't have a working computer at home right now and all of my time is filled with cooking, walking and trying to fix the dangèd computer. Here's a bit of what I've been up to: On Saturday, I fixed Isidore sort of by accident. I started him up, ran through all the repair utility thingies, actually got him going for the first time in weeks, played with him for several hours, backed some stuff up, restarted him to make sure he really was fixed, played with him some more,...

My So-Called Online Life

Life without a computer has been a lot easier than I expected. I figured I would be breaking down in tears and nervous breakdowns by the weekend, but I've been pretty casual about it. Part of it is that I don't want to know if Isidore is dead dead, permanently dead so I've been taking my time about trying to fix him. The longer I put off knowing the situation... the longer I put off knowing the situation. So I've made attempts here and there but haven't given up hope and haven't actually touched him in several days. I get...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Isidore is sick. Isidore is sick. Isidore is Blue Screen of Death-style sick. I am frightened. I am at work after hours so I can use their Internet to take my Jeopardy! test and find Dell's tech support phone number (oh joy) and reconfigure my email addresses so that I can read email over the web. It is sad times around here. I hope my poor baby (who is now almost three years old, or "ancient" in laptop years) will pull through....

My baby!

Isidore is fine. I borrowed Mr B******'s power cord and powered him up and now he seems to be running correctly. So the problem, it seems, is all in some part of the chargey thing. No fear of surges or other brain damage from his time in a coma. Whew. Update: Well, I've now discovered that he won't run on battery power and will only work when directly plugged into the wall. Boo hoo. I don't know if he just needs a new battery or if it's something worse than that, but... well, I'm not as worried as I once...

Fretful mother

My baby is sick. My baby is sick. My baby is sick. What am I going to do? I got home from the David Sedaris thing (was it a lecture? Was it a reading? What was it? It was a "thing."), sat down in front of Isidore to blog and... nothing. I pushed the power button and nothing happened. I started to panic and push it more often and hold it down and anything I could think of that might make him spring back to life. Spring he did not. "Maybe his battery is dead?" I speculated to my parents....

Isidore makes the connection

Well, in case you can't tell, Isidore is online today. While sitting in the computer lab, I overheard the properties manager/IT guy on the phone, telling someone he was leaving town tonight. I'm sure I only whimpered in my mind, but he may have picked up on it because he came over and talked to me about my network connection. For some reason, he seems to have warmed to me, because he typed in all of the IP information that was missing and now I can connect from anywhere that's close enough to one of the wireless points around campus....

Veni, vidi, comedi tui pistachi

I got up earlier this morning, full of vim and vigour and ready to start the day... but I didn't have anything to do except nag the properties manager/IT guy about my internet connection. I suspect that with people pooping in the Abbey, he has more pressing and important things to worry about than me actually doing work. Becky just bought a new coffee pot so she's offered me her old one to heat up water for tea. It took a minute for me to figure out how it worked and I ended up spilling water all over myself, my...

Does Baby want some attention-wention?

I have not yet sortied Isidore from his pochette. I am terrified of draining his batteries and I keep hoping that sleep will be an alternative option. So much for Sims All The Way To France!...

Who's a widdle waptopkins?

I have been trying very hard not to be the New Parent who thinks that their baby is the most amazing thing in the world and has to tell you about everything that it does as if it were something special, when you know very well that millions of other babies can do the same thing. I think this is why I haven't been blogging regularly - I've been playing with Isidore and reveling in all of the amazing things I can do and the amazing places I can compute from but trying not to blog about all of them....
