Time to get out the ol' Famous Cities skirt!

Frightening realization: My new haircut makes me look less like Rachael Leigh Cook in She's All That and more like Rachael Leigh Cook as Mary Anne Spier in The Baby-Sitters Club. I am totally going to fit in in Stamford this weekend! Maybe I will pick up some baby-sitting gigs or solve a mystery while I am there. Or maybe I need to find a new hairstyle inspiration that is closer to my own age. (Speaking of the BSC, this is unspeakably awesome. So I will speak of it no more for the next five minutes, at least.)...

It takes me forever to get around to getting a haircut. Frequently I'll go three or four months between haircuts, because it seems like such a waste of money to spend it on my head, which I hardly even ever look at. But I thought it was important to chop off some of the stringy mess so that I could look presentable in Seattle, so off I went to the salonnnnn¹. The hair-cutting lady² and I didn't get off to a good start, because she asked me if I was a student, then was relentless in her quest to convince...

I got a haircut on Monday. What I have discovered so far is that it looks fine if I take the time to blow-dry and style it, but if I try to let it just air-dry, I look like Ramona Quimby, Age 8....

How should I get my hair cut? I am stumped. I'm really tired of my hair right now, but I don't know what would be better. So I appeal to a bunch of strangers on the Internet for advice, which I probably will not take and will just go back and get a trim on my existing "style". For the record, I have very fine, thin hair and look like some, but not all, of these people and/or sacred lakes. Photos of other people with the hairstyle you describe would be appreciated. Hairstyles that make me look like a grown-up...

While I generally have some kind of anxiety about using the phone, I can usually just suck it up and git 'er done. However, I put off setting up an appointment for a haircut for a couple of weeks. I don't know why it was so hard, but I kept thinking, "Naaah, I'll do it later." Maybe I suspected, deep down, that if I waited long enough, the salon would call me. I called last Friday, hoping that I could get an appointment for Monday evening. No dice. The next time she was free after 5 was Wednesday. Alas! My...

When I go to get my hair cut, I always come in with my hair parted on the right and leave with my hair parted on the right left. I, of course, don't realize what's going on until she announces that she's done and hands me the mirror to look at it. I haven't decided if I'm in some minority of right-side-parters and she's used to parting it on the left, if she somehow got the impression that I part my hair on the left and has never changed it, if she really wants my hair to be parted on...

I got my hair cut today. Again. I took Robin along to translate from English to Haircuttese and still didn't get exactly what I wanted. What I want is something that requires absolutely no effort and makes people go "Hey, that's a really cute haircut!" What I've got is... okay, I guess. I think I would have gone shorter if I'd been in control, but they told me this was short enough. Who knows... maybe this one will turn out impressive (or at least noticeable) and easy to manage. I've only seen it in fresh-from-the-haircut-and-blowdried mode, so maybe it will...

Got my hair cut. Came home. My mom looked at me and asked, "Did you get it cut?" Sigh... That's two unremarkable haircuts in a row. Next time I'm getting a buzz cut and dyeing the fuzz red just so I'll look noticeably different. I just want to be noticed. I need everyone, male and female, to tell me I look faaaaaaaabulous, in the voice of this guy....

I have a haircutting appointment on Tuesday. I'm going back to Robin's hair-cutting lady. I will look good and feel guilty for abandoning mine. Either that or she will have gone insane in my absence and I will feel guilty and look like crap. Why can't I get just a haircut and not have big dramatic issues about it, as I assume normal people do? Well, if I weren't insane and neurotic and overdramatic, then I wouldn't have anything to blog about, now would I?...

Robin has been trying to convince me for years to go to her hair-cutting lady, but I felt guilty cheating on my own. Finally, when I returned from France, I did it - thinking that it would appease Robin and I could just go to my normal hair-cutting lady the next time. Except Robin's hair-cutting lady gave me a really nice haircut. Tonight I am skulking guiltily back to the normal one, and I'm going to try to get her to cut it the same, but now I'm feeling guilty about cheating on Robin's hair-cutting lady by taking this great...

Because I am a Big Nerd, I have taken great joy in telling people that I didn't brush my hair today. I got my hair cut yesterday, and the haircutting lady told me that it was so low-maintenance, I wouldn't even need to brush it - I could just finger-comb it and go. So I decided to test this out this morning, and my hair is just fine. And I can tell people I didn't brush my hair, because that makes me sound Really Cool....

Un-blow-dried, my hair looks much the same as it did pre-haircut, minus some split ends. No one has remarked on it, so I assume it's not noticeable. Whatever....

I got over my trouille of having my hair cut. No, that's not true. I got my hair cut despite the ever-present trouille. Getting my hair cut in France never cures my fear of getting my hair cut in France. I don't know why this is. It might be too short in front, or that might be because she blow-dried it all poofy. My hair is enormous and poofy and I can't decide if I like that or not. Tomorrow we shall see it in its natural state and see what we can do with it....

Who are you and what are you doing in my house?

My errand o' the day was to pick Howie up at the groomer's. "Groomer's". Sounds fancy. Perhaps I should say "Haircutting Place". Or "Furcutting". I wouldn't call this place a "Groomer's" because he always ends up looking like a cross between a rat and a lizard. A tangential story about the Furcutting Place is that it's in a building that until recently was some kind of Asian Health Spa or something that got shut down when it was revealed as a brothel. After the Furcutters moved in, they kept getting boxes of high-heeled shoes in the mail. Back to story....

I never know what to call the person who cuts my hair. Hairdresser sounds like something my grandma would say and stylist sounds a bit too la-di-da for someone like me, whose hair has no style whatsoever. So she ends up being "The Woman Who Cuts My Hair" or "My Haircutting Lady". Anyway, my haircutting lady is out on maternity leave, so I made an appointment with someone else at the same place. When I was a teenager, I resented the fact that haircutting ladies always tried to talk to me. But now I've come to accept it as part...
