Every few months I like to remind Universal Pictures (passive-aggressively, in blogged song-parody format) of how annoyed I am that they haven't released The Pirates of Penzance on DVD. That'll show them! I can hear them caring right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IUZSj7vBcw srahAccording to the holy textOf the FSM and all his sect,The reason Earth's too hot these daysIs a population kept at bayAs pirate numbers do decreaseIn Kathmandu, Peru and GreeceHis nood'ly appendage to us will bringThis terrible scourge: global warming. He brought global warming! And it is, it is a terrible thingTo have global warming! He brought global warmingUniversal PicturesHe did!He brought global...

Every one we capture says he's an orphan. The last three ships we took proved to be manned entirely by orphans, and so we had to let them go. One would think that Great Britain's mercantile navy was recruited solely from her orphan asylums - which we know is not the case.-Frederic, The Pirates of Penzance But what if it were the case? I like to imagine the Pirates of Penzance capturing the HMS Pinafore, only to find that it is crewed by orphans from the workhouse in Oliver!, all barely able to dance a proper hornpipe because they're suffering...

Reading through the IMDb message board for The Pirates of Penzance¹, I found that someone had posted the address of Universal Studios' contact form, encouraging other fans to ask Universal to release Pirates on DVD. This is what I wrote: Please release The Pirates of Penzance on DVD! I was at a video rental store this weekend and discovered that they had phased out their VHS rentals in favor of DVDs. As VHS is phased out, so - sadly - is The Pirates of Penzance, as that is the only version of the movie that is currently available. Generations will...

You may be interested - nay, fascinated - to learn that I have just been granted posting privileges at the humorous list-based blog lists(dq). You can all rush over there immediately to read my hilaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarious first post: Lines from The Pirates of Penzance That Would Be Funnier If The Word “duty” Were Changed to “doody” It is a very mature and thought-provoking topic, and unfortunately I am also pretty sure that it marks the apex of my career as a humorous list-maker. It will all be downhill from here, folks! Many thanks to Alfie, who laughed with me in the...

Apete gave me an mp3 player for Christmas, so ever since then I've been experimenting with different mixes of music to play on it while I go for my walks. It's pretty obvious that pop music like the Spice Girls and Britney Spears, while not exactly something you want to go around advertising to the world that you listen to, have a pretty good beat for keeping a good walking pace. So as long as you keep the volume low and those earbuds firmly pushed into your ear, no one need know. On the other hand, the tempo of Chayanne's...

RUTH One moment! let me tell you who they are. They are no members of the common throng; They are all noblemen who have gone wrong. ALL They are all noblemen who have gone wrong. MAJOR-GENERAL STANLEY No Englishman unmoved that statement hears, Because, with all our faults, we love our House of Peers. I pray you, pardon me, ex-Pirate King! Peers will be peers, and youth will have its fling. Resume your ranks and legislative duties, And take my daughters, all of whom are beauties. I bet that in the months following the end of The Pirates of Penzance...

When I looked through my closet there, I found shoes rarely worn by me; And so my blog would be less bare, I wished you all to see. I said "It's not a pair of heels, a pair of sneakers or a clog." It's necessary, Sarah feels, To show it on her blog. A pair of Docs? A pair of Docs, A most ingenious pair of Docs! I've got new loafers in their box, But none quite like this pair of Docs!...

I realized today that there are certain things that should be a prerequisite for anyone hoping to be "in" with srahfamily*. Srahfamily is, of course, the coolest family on earth and everyone wants to be "in" with them. But first you must understand the organizational culture by way of its cultural artifacts!**. This is an attempt to chronicle some of the things that are most often quoted or referred to around here (in some cases I have included a favorite quote because I just can't help myself!): BooksThe Stupids Die ("This isn't heaven - this is Cleveland!")Dave Barry's Book of...

My sister set out to watch Hello Dolly! last night and instead ended up watching Road to Bali. My mom and I immediately had the same reaction: "The two were so much alike!" "They were! They still are!" She didn't take kindly to us making fun of her through Pirates of Penzance quotes and really ought to have fired back something along the lines of: "Collectively, I look upon you with a disgust that amounts to absolute detestation."...

I saw my pirate movie last night. Sigh... It was lovely. There are movies that make me laugh, but my face returns to a neutral movie-watching face after that. This is one of the few that makes me grin. Tho' I'm sure Legolas had something to do with that. Mmmmm. Pirates are wonderful. If I can be very nerdy for a moment, I think I like them because they have such interesting language. They have muddled, strange accents from being on boats with a mix of people, and they have a vocabulary all their own. I am so going to...

After reading plenty of Saki, Wodehouse, and various other books that touch on the subject, I've decided that I want a big gang of relatives clamouring for my favour and sucking up to stay in my good graces, in the hopes that they will be the heirs to my enormous fortune. The only problem I can see so far is the absence of said enormous fortune, but I have decided that it would be a lot easier to inherit it myself than to earn it. So I've decided to become the heir to the estate of Arthur Sullivan or Richard...

I have started reading The Diary of a Nobody. "What a coincidence," comes a voice from the Peanut Gallery, "I am reading the same thing myself, this very minute." Quiet, you. The name of one of the co-authors of this humorous Victorian story of life in the middle-class suburbs sounded familiar to me. After some grueling research, consisting of reading the Introduction, I learned that it is, indeed, the same George Grossmith who was a member of the D'Oyly Carte theater company and who played such parts as John Wellington Wells and Ko-Ko in the original productions of Gilbert and...

Apologies to Messrs Gilbert and Sullivan. I'm going to visit his coin (coin coin) I hope that it isn't trop loin (trop loin) And we will see what there's to see in the départements de la Loire. And we will see what there's to see in the départements de la Loire....

One of the things that I have found myself missing during my two extended experiences abroad is the ability to kick out the jams and sing. Ha ha, I said "kick out the jams". I am so not cool. As you may already know, I am by no means a singer of any talent whatsoever. The only places I feel comfortable singing are in the car - because I can be in an enclosed space all alone and no one need hear me when I sing at the top of my lungs - and in the privacy of my own...

I don't know if I really have a point or a message to this blog, but I felt like posting about the kinds of comedy I like. Then I shall invite you at the end to share your favorite types of comedy. We will all rejoice in the sharing that results. Animaniacs - I liked Animaniacs because it's fun for the kiddies, but it's fun for us, too. Adults, or whatever we are. It's funny on several levels and often plays off things that only older people would understand like current events, Jerry Lewis, or... Gilbert and Sullivan. Helloooooooo Nurse!...
