Summertime... and the parkin' is easy...

Summer is held at the wrong time of year. In Srahtown in the summer, there is suddenly an abundance of parking available. You can arrive late and still get a good spot. You can leave during the day, come back and park in the same spot... or a better one! It is glorious! Vive l'été! This is not the case the rest of the year. The rest of the year, there are fierce battles over parking spaces, with shivs and chains and tridents and suchlike. Academics in their tweed jackets and elbow patches hold their Very Academic Pipes in one...

'I've taken this boat many places. Miami. Tokyo. Denver.'

I had a whole lot of stuff to write about my wonderful trip to San Francisco (a bajillion years ago) and the not-so-wonderful travel in order to get there, but there's just too much to say and not enough time to write it all. I will try to do it bit by bit rather than writing it all in one go, and return to the land of the blogging. Jday, you win! Thursday, March 20 I set off for the airport several hours early, with the idea that as long as I was going for a long drive to the...

The hero/ Under the stairs is now the man who holds/ Our last true prayer

Listening to Harry Potter books-on-tape while driving seems like a good idea, until you're driving in the rain at the end of Deathly Hallows and you have to see through two levels of moisture. I don't have windshield wipers for my tears! http://youtube.com/watch?v=tXClBpytvRg Good news: I was actually sad when Dobby died this time. Apparently Jim Dale's narration added something to the story that was not there when The Voice Inside Srah's Head was reading the book last summer. Is it 2010 yet?...

I like where I are/ When I can, find my car

I am apparently senile. This morning I walked out the door to go to work, looked out at the parking lot and discovered my car was not there. I momentarily freaked out. I had just been talking to my Arabic professor this week about how what little crime there is in Srahtown usually consists of crimes of opportunity, and how I've managed to avoid anything so far by a) not getting drunk, b) not being out on the streets at 3am, when all of these incidents seem to occur and c) locking my doors. Now here I was, being so...

Where's the beef?

I went to Chicago last weekend! I am very slow at writing these travel-weekend writeups, and even moreso when I spend the week trying to catch up on sleep. Fortunately, the weekend is almost here, so I can clean, claim I'm going to clean and then not clean, and - most importantly - sleep. I drove up to Chicago for Lewis's birthday celebrations Saturday afternoon/evening. It takes about 5 hours to get to Chicago, although it took me a little longer because - no matter how good my directions are - I always second-guess them and get lost when I...

In the future, we will all have flying cars! But our kids will be jerks.

When I was driving to work yesterday, I thought, "Well, it's Tuesday. Gas prices are usually lowest on Wednesday or Thursday, but this is a holiday weekend, so I should probably fill my half-empty tank this evening when I get off work." Between driving past the gas station in the morning and the time I got off work, gas in my town went up 30¢ a gallon! Argh! I am obsessed with gas prices so I tend to watch them like a hawk so that I can save something like 20¢ on a fill-up, but this will probably be a...

A sign that I am getting less and less cool in my old age

I spent most of my early life listening to Oldies music. In order to prepare my track list for smg's CD swap, I went and got out my old mix tapes from high school and scouted out which tracks I also had in CD or mp3 form. A mix from 1994 includes "Turn, Turn, Turn" by The Byrds, "Bobby's Girl" by Marcy Blaine, "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" by Cher, "Downtown" by Petula Clark, "Oh Sweet Pea" by Tommy Roe and "Walk Away Renee" by the Left Banke as well as a smattering of showtunes and some more contemporary songs. I...

On the phone whilst driving! Naughty!

me, driving on I-75 back from Ohio: I hate these flammable tanker trucks! apete: It's just milk. me: What? No, they've got big signs with flames on them! apete: Nah. Milk. me: What? Cows don't have flames on them! What kind of cows have flames on them? apete: Racing cows....

Local geography quiz

On Washtenaw Avenue going east after the US-23 exit, there is a left-turn light onto Pittsfield Boulevard. Am I LOSING MY MIND, or did that just appear this weekend? Didn't it used to be a regular light, where you had to wait for oncoming traffic? It was a stupid regular light, because you couldn't see the oncoming traffic coming up the hill, but I believe it was a regular light when I went through that intersection late last week. It's like it just came out of nowhere - one day it was a plain light and the next it was...

Lord of the Flies ruined me for Young People in Mass Quantities

Dear State Street (including pedestrians, idiot drivers and - hell, the traffic light at State and North University, just for being there): Die die die die die die die. I was on North University, trying to turn left onto State. The woman in front of me in the left-turn lane pulled out into the intersection, then tried to wait for some parked cars to go. It was very courteous of her to let these cars go in front of her, but they didn't want to go. That's why they were parked. WITH NO DRIVERS IN THEM. Then she made a...

Pedestrians, beware!

I've had pretty bad headaches the past couple of days because I can't find any of my sunglasses (last I knew, I owned three pairs) and I've been squinting at the sun. I went shopping at Meijer and browsed the sunglasses section, but they were all around $25! Hell if I'm going to spend $25 on sunglasses, which I will then LOSE, and I'm especially not going to do so at Meijer. Robin and I made a small trip to Target today, where prices were much more reasonable. For the less than price of one pair of Meijer-sunglasses, I got...

'Guess who sighs his lullabies/ Through nights that never end?'

We planned to leave at 9am, so I set my alarm for 7. I would have plenty of time to get myself ready and to repack all of my bags before retrieving the car from the parking garage. Then I woke up at 6:15. By 6:30, I was wide awake with my eyes wide open, willing myself to go back to sleep. Alas, it was not to be, so I got up and puttered around in my suitcase until I could allow myself to go and shower. Due to being wide awake, the morning's preparations went very quickly and by...

The Bronx is up and Matt's battery's down

Stupid things I did today: Try to drive us to Chicago instead of to New York City. I was so concerned with where we should store the Ohio Turnpike toll ticket that I didn't pay attention to the ramp I chose and we started heading west. We didn't lose that much time, but it did seem to take forever before we got to a point where we could turn around. Go to Hoboken, NJ. Well, okay, this wasn't really my decision, but it was stupid and I did it. Step on the passenger-side invisible-brake so hard and for so long...

I shall cuddle you to safety!

Driving to Mr B------'s movie premiere on Saturday night, I saw a brownish chunk of snow in the middle of the road. It was a brownish chunk of snow like all other brownish chunks of snow that ride around and around on tires, get stuck in wheel-wells and eventually fall off. I slowed down a little to go around the curve and was very glad that I had done so when the chunk of brown snow suddenly hopped forward. I stopped the car and the chunk hopped again. I inched forward behind the little tiny bunny, who just hopped down...

'Knees weak, palms are sweaty'

I live about an hour from the Detroit area. I say "the Detroit area" because I've always considered anywhere covered by Detroit radio stations' traffic coverage to be "Detroit." It always annoyed my Shelby Township-native college roommate that I said she was from Detroit and couldn't see any difference between where she lived, St. Clair Shores or Dearborn, so I have since expanded to calling that whole fuzzy Eastern region "the Detroit area" instead of "Detroit." I have no family over here and very little reason to come to the Detroit area, so I've never learned my way around or...

Home town girl

Enrolling at U-M has turned me into some kind of schizophrenic mutant. All of my other friends got this out of their system during the undergraduate years, I assume, so they aren't very sympathetic to my confusion and observations. I've spent my whole life avoiding campus for fear of hitting pedestrian students with my car and now I am one of them. I'm a townie but I'm a student. I'm running myself over and telling myself to go back to where I came from, sneering at myself and blocking myself in traffic by crossing against the light. I am constantly...

The Day the Lights Went Out

15:30. I'm sitting at my computer, reloading and reloading Internet Explorer, annoyed that the Albion email server still isn't up. I'm feeling there's something missing in my life. When I was in France, there was a sense of newness and adventure. Everything was a new experience. Right now, there is too little adventure in my life. I consider blogging about it, but decide that blogging about the lack of adventure would be really boring. I despair and return to work. 16:15. The lights flicker, then I lose power to my computer, losing whatever file I was working on. This is...

Por ejemplo, Citrón

One of the things I miss when I'm away from the United States is driving. Not the driving itself, mind you, because I hate that. But the being locked up in an enclosed space all alone. The freedom to talk or sing to yourself without inflicting it on others or being judged by them. I love to turn a song waaaaaaay up and sing along in the car. You're enclosed with the music, you don't have to worry about bothering family members or neighbors, and you can really get into it... unless you're stopped at a light and people are...

I am an evil person

I broke the law the other day. I resisted for as long as I could but I finally gave in and did it. Later I discovered a way I could have gotten around it without breaking the law. I am a naughty person. I was at a red light at about 1am, waiting to turn left. And waiting. And waiting. Something was wrong or the sensors weren't picking me up... I don't know. I tried backing up and going forward again to see if I could trip a sensor... nothing. So finally, after much suggestion from the Pato, I looked...
