Round about map point #11 or #8 (somewhere just north of Touchdown Jesus) is the I-70/I-75 interchange, where construction was already underway when I moved here in 2005. I have never seen any work being done on it, and construction is still underway four years later. There are some signs that whatever they're doing may be inexplicably nearing completion, though. So I'm pretty sure the construction is being done by Oompa Loompas. No one goes in... no one comes out... and yet the construction/confection is (slowly) produced....

This I Believe (At the Moment)

NPR has an ongoing series called "This I Believe" where people share their important beliefs. I've often thought about that segment and what I would say if I were featured on the show. Unfortunately, I've never been able to settle on one theme for very long. And I am also not very good at taking things seriously. So I bring you: This I Believe (At the Moment) I believe that the highest point in the history of recorded sound was when Johnny Mathis recorded "Chances Are." Whatever the motivations were for inventing sound recording technology, they were ultimately satisfied when...

Realigning the traffic flow

*BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!* This is the sound of the first step being taken to Srah Having An Office Of Her Very Own That Is Not Connected To The Kitchenette/Work Area In Such A Way That People Have To Walk Through Srah's Office To Make Tea or Send Faxes. Hurrah! But not so much for the Getting Work Done. There is talk that I may be relocated (maybe even to Working From Home!) during the construction. *BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!*...

Central Services! We do the work, you do the pleasure...

We are having central air conditioning installed in the house this week. They began today and should finish up by Friday. At this point, they've installed some of the tubes that the air will be flowing through but haven't connected them to the vents or, I assume, to the central cooling system. There are big, insulated silvery things poking out of holes in the ceiling and I'm concerned that a tiny Robert De Niro is going to pop out of one of them....

Oh, joy unbounded! Oh, sweet relief! Oh, rapture unexampled!

That which I felt I could but dream of has finally come to be. Can it be true? Have the Fates smiled on one so lowly as myself? Can such unequaled happiness really be my own? Here is food for joyous laughter, indeed! Yes, folks, they have finally finished the construction on Bonisteel Avenue and the North Commuter bus is trundling all the way up instead of stopping at the end and making me walk. Shut up, I was excited....

I was watching TV with my grandma and the rest of my family (I don't remember why, but it was significant that my grandma was there) and flipping uncontrollably through channels. Something about Jamaicans came up - a TV show or a reference or something. Then I was at Meijer with my sister and my high school nemesis and her mom. We were buying peas, but I was carrying everything in my arms for some reason and as we neared the checkout, I started dropping everything. I dropped two cans of peas and they broke, so I had to go...

The Day the Lights Went Out

15:30. I'm sitting at my computer, reloading and reloading Internet Explorer, annoyed that the Albion email server still isn't up. I'm feeling there's something missing in my life. When I was in France, there was a sense of newness and adventure. Everything was a new experience. Right now, there is too little adventure in my life. I consider blogging about it, but decide that blogging about the lack of adventure would be really boring. I despair and return to work. 16:15. The lights flicker, then I lose power to my computer, losing whatever file I was working on. This is...

Pardon me while I spew into a Paige™ box

Construction continues. The building is shaking. It's not a pleasant massage-like vibration, but a sort of constant horrible shaking that gives one a feeling rather reminiscent of being car-sick. Bleaaaaaaargh....

How many times can I say 'plastic sheeting'?

The library is under construction, so I'm actually glad that I work at TPTIBLOT four afternoons a week and TPTIBLOT2 three mornings a week, which adds up to one morning off and one day spent here. Mysterious things keep happening to the library; mysterious because no one tells me about them. Today when I came back from TPTIBLOT2 at lunchtime, the entrance to the back hallway was covered in plastic sheeting. Someone had managed to make an archivist-sized hole in the plastic sheeting, which to my way of thinking defeated the purpose of having plastic sheeting up. So to get...

La plombería del apartamento al lado del mío

God only knows what I've just said in Spanish. I think they've finished the apartment next door, which is rather odd because they'd only been at it two days. It sort of frightens me because I don't see how they could fit the shower in the bathroom without knocking out some walls, so I fear they may have just plonked the it down in the middle of the kitchen. The plumber asked me last night if I could switch apartments today. Yeah, like it's that simple. And yeah, like I didn't have to work. I'm kind of hoping I won't...
