You've got the teeth of the hydra upon you

I got many exciting Christmas presents this holiday season, but two in particular that I think the readers of this blog might be interested in. First, I got a package addressed "To: Sarah; From: Kota." Our family usually has little jokes/hints on the gift tags, but this name meant nothing to me, so I was intrigued. I opened up the box and it was the GPS that I'd asked for: Hooray! I still didn't understand the whole "Kota" thing, though. I lifted up the GPS... And discovered a plastic triceratops hidden among the GPS accessories. Then I remembered that Kota...

I received an email from my dad this morning: Subject: This is what you are getting for ChristmasMessage body: We saw an ad for this on TV and thought it was much more useful than a GPS When I clicked on the link, this is what I saw:...

Interviewed by The Collective

It's been over a week since The Collective invited readers to be interviewed. I asked for questions then forgot about it for a while, but here - at last - are my answers to their questions. From Jennie!: 1) Why does Ohio insist on throwing more snow at us? Why? From heather! anne!: 2) What is the all-time best Christmas movie? The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. It makes me tear up every time I see Imogene taking her earrings out to look more like Mary, or hear that Leroy left the ham behind for the Baby Jesus. "It's a present....

'Mary doesn't even get to name her own baby? I woulda called him Bill.'

'Tis the season for lists, 'tisn't it? Last year I listed my favorite Christmas songs so this year I'll do my favorite Christmas movies. Maybe next year - if I remember - it will be books. srah's Ultimate List of the Best Christmas Movies and/or Movies That Take Place at Christmas Home Alone - I actually haven't seen this in years, but it makes the list out of some sort of loyalty to my Not-So-Secret Twin.Christmas in Connecticut - I love Barbara Stanwyck and I love Cuddles Szakall. Never mind that I can't remember exactly what happens in the movie....

We need a little Christmas right this very minute soonish

I placed an order on Amazon.com December 1st. I only waited as long as the 1st because I wanted to make all of my purchases at once, so as to be eligible for the Free Super Saver Shipping. It seemed like a good day, though. It certainly wasn't last-minute, but I wasn't making my Christmas purchases in August, either. By the 1st I had a pretty good idea of what I needed to buy online vs in the store, so I made my purchase. When I was done, I checked the order online and saw that the estimated delivery date...

Beautiful girl, you're a lovely picture

We had our yearly photo session this weekend to take a picture for the family Christmas card, just as we've done for the last 28 years. Wow, that's a lot of years when you write it down! As usual, Alfie and I insisted on taking some joke pictures and messed up many others by having no idea what we were doing. Hansel and Zoolander we are not. As usual, we fervently wished that our parents would choose the joke/outtake photos over the serious pictures. And as usual, the parents prefer the serious ones. So we'll be sending out this one:...

Sancta nox, placida nox/ Nusquam est ulla vox

I am an inveterate list-maker, so here is a list of some of my favorite Christmas songs, inspired by all of the Muzak and All Christmas All The Time radio stations I've been subjected to during my holiday shopping. "Carol of the Bells" "Sleigh Ride" - Instrumental versions only, and especially the one with horse-whinnying at the end. "The Nutcracker Suite" - No particular song within the suite - I pretty much like the whole thing. It's been my cookie-baking soundtrack lately. "O Holy Night" - Choral versions, because soloists get all divalicious and operatic about it and I would...

'Tis the season of yuletide amnesia

Just think of it!, thinks srah, Egg nog! It sounds so delicious and seasonal! Then she goes out and buys for her candy dish at work a holiday variety pack of tasty chocolates in egg nog, cinnamon almond and peppermint flavors. Which shall I sample first? ponders srah the simpleton. She takes a dainty nibble of an egg nog flavored chocolate and suddenly has no desire to eat anything ever again, for her taste buds have been tainted by the horror that is The Nog. Christmas comes but once a year, and fortunately, so does egg nog. Unfortunately, I never...

Guess whose sad, pathetic self will need a visit from the Social Bunny?

Merry Christmas, Internet. Long time no see. I got The Sims 2 for Christmas. Isidore has been otherwise occupied and not able to play with you folks. We'll be back... eventually....

Compendium epistolaritus

Dear WNIC, All this fake-ass pre-Thanksgiving Christmasery is driving me nuts. It is harder and harder for me to resist decorating the blog for the holidays. Your somewhat loyal fan, srah Dear Stupid Band On The Radio Who Used The Phrase "supersize our tragedy," Oh my god, you suck. What the hell was that? srah Dear Saleswoman at Ann Taylor, I'm sorry I argued with you. You said the coat I was returning had been paid for with a check and I argued that it had been bought with a credit card and went on and on with my...

'Our need for presents is really dire/ Oops I set myself on fire'

I like to remind my family every once in a while why they don't like to take me to church. It's because I am too endowed with the Spirit of Christmas! That is, of course, if the True Meaning of Christmas is to sing all of the foreign-language lyrics to the carols instead of the ones everyone else is singing. Six verses of O Come All Ye Faithful? I'll just sing Adeste Fidelis six times! And Stille Nacht and Sainte Nuit instead of Silent Night! Unfortunately, I didn't have with me the alternate lyrics to the Advent Song that Alfie...

The beginning (and end) of srah's illustrious directing career

When I was a senior in high school, I directed the church's Christmas pageant. This was not because of any interest in religion or religious displays or any love for the church, since all of this had been waning for years. I volunteered to direct the Christmas pageant because I was tired of years without Christmas pageants and of years with strange, new updated versions of the Christmas pageant. I remembered Christmas pageants when I was young - the same script, the same songs and the same parts year after year. It was tradition and you always knew what to...

Update on the $5 gift situation

Everyone should have some kind of restrictions in present-buying, because it turns out it fosters creativity. I think this is the only way to explain why I have actually found some interesting presents for my extended family and kind of... um... haven't gotten around to buying anything for anyone else. There's a whole world of presents out there, and I can't see the forest for the trees! So the rest of you don't get anything at all. Sorry....

Good tidings I bring to me and my kin

We're having a big extended-family Christmas celebration this year. One of the rules is that each person has to bring a $5 (maximum) gift for each other person at the party. So instead of having some kind of Secret Santa thing where you could get one worthwhile $25 gift, we get armloads of $5 crap. Deee-lightful. Any suggestions on less-than-$5 gifts? Don't worry - I only see these people about once a year (if that), so you probably know them about as well as I do....

'You're a fine piece of real estate/ and I'm gonna get me some land'

Christmas music was a lot better when it was limited to one station. I could listen to real music on other stations, then switch to WNIC for guaranteed Christmas music. Now WNIC is still All Christmas, All The Time but the other stations have started playing some as well. I shouldn't have to flip through the dial four times in search of "real" music and have to settle for Shania Twain!...

'The man was a Beatle, for god's sake!'

Alright, you guys win. Paul McCartney's stupid "Wonderful Christmastime" is on the radio every time I turn to WNIC so I, too, hate it with a burning passion. My new favorite Christmas song o' the moment (because we can't "Stab into Christmas" at every moment of the day*) is "Feliz Navidad". Hearing music in Spanish on Detroit radio is so rare that I get waaaay too excited to be able to sing about felicidad. * ... or can we?...

Do you hear what I hear?

As I drove into work this morning, I flipped through the dial, looking for a radio station that was playing actual music on a morning show. I came across WNIC, which has already begun playing non-stop Christmas music. I actually enjoyed it because they played this rock medley of Christmas songs that was harder than anything you would usually hear on the lovely Detroit adult contemporary station. I don't know whether to be excited or disgusted by the "holiday season" beginning weeks before Thanksgiving. I generally like Christmas carols until I've heard the same one fifteen times in a row,...

I got many lovely presents...

I got many lovely presents, including The Sims Hot Date, which will ensure that I never have to venture into the real world again, and a European phrase book, which will enable me to say děkuji, tak, dank u wel, kiitos, merci, danke, ευχαριστώ, Köszönöm, grazie, takk, dziękuję, obrigada, gracias and tack instead of "thank you"....
