http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NIBxJgUolw In August, Dooce and somebody else¹ posted their Lists of Five within a few days of each other, and I thought that this would be a fun idea for a blog post, so I started compiling mine. It has taken me two months to get where I am now, which is: 1. Richard Ayoade is a Cambridge graduate (and former president of Footlights), the talented director of many music videos and the star of The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, The Mighty Boosh, The Big Fat Anniversary Quiz and several creepy posts on my blog that would scare...

Srarold and Kumar Go to the Grocery Store

Kal Penn and some guy I've never heard of are travelling around Ohio universities this week, trying to convince young people to vote for Barack Obama. When I got the notification that he was coming to The University I Work At, my initial reaction was (direct quote from my Facebook profile): KAL PENN! KAL PENN IS COMING HERE! I think he's coming to meet me and marry me and this whole Obama thing is just a cover. KAL PENN! Then once I calmed down and thought about it, I was conflicted because I hate it when celebrities get political. I...

I'm a nerd, okay? Leave me be.

So much for my Writers' Strike plans. Instead of the Quantumleapapalooza I predicted, all of my television needs have been fulfilled by outsourcing. Corner GasThis Canadian series is running on Superstation WGN at bizarre hours like 11:30pm on Sunday night and 8pm on Wednesday. This is why I have only seen two episodes of Pushing Daisies, folks. It is not that I dislike Pushing Daisies, but something about Pushing Daisies makes my heart ache a little bit, and Corner Gas just makes me laugh. Be gone with you, angst! Instead we shall drive around in little cars. Never Mind the...

Now I will go try on some shoes...

Hello, The Internet. If you care to be all up in my personal business like that, I will tell you that apete and I broke up today. We couldn't make the long-distance thing work, it's mutual but it still hurts and that is all I care to share with The Internet. I hate telling people about breakups and I really hate being all Web 2.0 about it, but I feel like I have to tell people somehow. I wish I could just wear a sandwich board instead, or maybe have a t-shirt printed. At least this way I can just...

Made of real gorilla chest?

Blake is doomed. He is doomed and he is going to meet his doom in grubby pants and a tuxedo t-shirt. Blake Blake Blake. However, I'm almost prepared to forgive him this horrifying fashion blunder because of the Hard Day's Night-inspired video for their weekly stupid American Idol Ford commercial, wherein Blake wears a vest. Almost. Vests impress me a lot, but not quite enough to make up for a tuxedo t-shirt. (Oh look! Another video!)...

Who's your daddy?

This season of American Idol has been very disappointing. I probably say this every year, but this year it seems like I hate more people than I like. With any luck, Whiny Chris and Alien Phil will leave this week and we will be left with only talented people. Out of the other four (Blake, Lakisha, Jordin and Melinda) I don't really care who wins, because Blake is so much better than everyone else that he has already transcended American Idol and doesn't really need to win. It's not that he's a better singer than the other three (he's usually...

Here are some words that rhyme with Sanjaya: pariah, papaya...

My answer to The Great Sanjaya Mystery (namely, "Why is he still on American Idol?") lies with Lisa Simpson. Lisa's favorite periodical is Non-Threatening Boys Magazine. And what could be less threatening to a naive, nervous prepubescent girl than a boy who will not show any interest in you at all? He is like a stepping stone for little girls: a boy who sort of looks like a girl and will never do anything gross like kiss them, but is sort of nice to look at. And he might let you braid his hair. I think this affinity for Non-Threatening...

The pen is mightier

The latest news from my Arabic class is that I got my HIGHEST STEPCOUNT DAY EVER yesterday. Wait, no, that's not related. But I did. The latest news from my Arabic class is that I have a crush on the "calligraphy professor" who lives in our textbook's accompanying DVDs. He's a scholarly, bespectacled type, who knows how to wield a pen. Ah, how I love a man with stylish writing implements! Yes, I am insane. As we learn to connect more letters, I am learning more and more words that can be made out of those letters. So now I...

Six Weird Things About Me That I Think Haven't Landed on The Blog Yet but I'm Too Lazy to Dig Through the Archives to Be Sure

I've been tagged with this meme by ze Fraulein. It's hard to find weird things about me that I haven't blogged. Well, I think I haven't blogged about these... Every night when I get into bed, I think about arms reaching out to grab my legs. This never happened when I had the same bed at my parents' house. What's particularly stupid is that there is this huge plastic box under my bed to hold wrapping supplies and it takes up all the space where the leg-grabber would be and I can see the box sitting there even as I...

Thank you kindly for obeying the law!

My sister just bought the first season of Due South on DVD and we've been working our way through it. It's widely accepted, I think, that Benton Fraser is The Perfect Man, but in episode 4, I realized that he was The Perfect Man for me (well, except for being fictional and all). In the episode, Fraser - who is handsome, clean, polite and respectful of rules - is inexplicably riding a horse through empty streets in Chicago. He stops his horse and his companion looks up to see that Fraser stopped because the traffic light had turned red. That...

Interview time IV: A New Interview

These questions are from Alfie: 1. What was your favorite class in college? My freshman seminar: To France and Back. It was all about cross-cultural communication and colored a lot of my later work/interactions at Albion, my year abroad and the rest of my life. 2. If you had the power to turn any fictional character into a real person, who would it be and what would you do with them (talk, kill them, etc.)? Gilbert Blythe! At last you and I can be together! You will be so confused and disoriented in the 21st century, but I shall take...

Another meme

I was tagged! What's to be done? 1. You're stuck inside Fahrenheit 451 - which book do you want to be? This is a strange question. What difference does it make, if they're all going to be burned? I guess Dante's Inferno, just for the sake of irony and because I've never read it. 2. Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Trillions. From books, Gilbert Blythe and Calvin O'Keefe come to mind. 3. The last book you bought is: I bought some books as Christmas presents... but I never have time to read anymore. :( So...

'I think you dropped an ice cube...'

I think it's probably my duty to provide my readers with vital information about how to deal with women. Because, you know, I have a lot of experience with that sort of thing, dealing with myself all the time as I do. I still have a crush on him, no matter how sick and weird that is! Which fictional characters have you had crushes on? To ponder

When we were out last night, it was proposed that you can't really get over an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend unless you hate them. As Peach Union said, 'On My Own'

So, hrmmm... I've been puzzling over it all day and can't find an amusing or entertaining way of telling this story... Somehow various recent chats with friends have helped me get a better picture of what I want out of life. This weekend I came to the conclusion that not only was I not happy, but I had the power to do something about it in an attempt to make myself happier. 'I dressed her son up like a girl and invited him to play with me'

Are you a 23 (or so) year old female? Do you remember Jonathan Brandis, star of such great works as Stephen King's It, "SeaQuest DSV" and the 1992 cross-dressing pre-teen comedy Ladybugs, featuring Rodney Dangerfield? Of course you do. Girls just wanna have sleep

My parents are going to Becky's football game this weekend and have left me their hockey tickets. Two hockey tickets. The problem here is that I have no friends. There are a few Post-It®-noted people I'm starting to think I could possibly consider friends, but they're all males who I don't want to give the wrong idea to or t-bone and I don't think t-bone's fiancé would like it if I stole her. srah succeeds where all self-help books have failed!

Lots of people claim not to understand the other sex, or claim that they're a different species or that they come from another planet. Personally, I can kind of see where men are coming from in that aspect. I am going to set out to demystify human relations. Or maybe just human-srah relations. Keep in mind that I have never read one of those self-help books, so I may be saying exactly what they've already come up with. Or I may just be spouting crap. Alex got back home on Monday and we broke up last night. As trite as it sounds, we've grown apart. We haven't seen much of each other in the past nine months and we've both had big, life-changing experiences during that time. Some people can make long-distance relationships work - we didn't. I've been stressing out about it for a while, but I didn't want to say anything here until we'd talked about it. I'm feeling quite relieved now. It's nice that we both saw that it was over, so no one's upset and we can still be friends....

We'll be queens! Damn hell ass queens!

With Cheryl's going-away party over, The Gang needed a new project. So our latest endeavour is finding royalty to marry. It's a very difficult process, because you have to find people who fit several criteria: being reasonably close to our own age, not frightening to look at, and high enough on the line of succession that we won't have so many people to kill off that it will look suspicious. As queens, we will bring new blood and good-old American gumption to the royal houses of Europe. We will do good works. We will arrange matches between our children. We...

More drug-crazed ramblings

At least I realize they're drug-crazed ramblings. That's something, at least. In between sending telegrams to The Front (textos to Renata), my other personality, the Major-General, has come up with the observation that girls are like cats and boys are like dogs. Or maybe it was me who came up with that. It's so crowded in there, it's hard to tell. Anyway, between the two (or seventeen, or however many there are) of us, we have managed to forget the evidence to support our claim, except that boys are often less complicated and more eager and drool a lot more....

Please do not repossess due to undeservedness

Why am I so lucky? And why can't this post wait four days? The answers are: I dunno and Because. I am struck tonight by how lucky I am to have my Pato, when so many other people out there are in bad relationships or no relationships. Notes from the Air France bus from Charles de Gaulle

The airport, not the dead former president. Alex is probably boarding his plane now, getting ready to leave for Frankfurt in 20 minutes. And here I am, in the bus, going away from him. He's managed to get away without me hanging on his pant leg and begging him not to leave me. Did you know that there's a Gandalf Airlines? I am reading The Lord of the Rings (well, The Fellowship of the Ring at the moment). I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that we saw The Two Towers in Grenoble (in English!) or that I am just happy to have something new to read, but I am enjoying it more than I have on previous attempts. Maybe it's the fact that I read the Prologue and discovered that the book began as a linguistic guide to Middle Earth - a way of explaining all of the languages in The Hobbit. Speaking of the...

My Pato tried out for Chekov's The Seagull on Monday and found out today that he's been cast as Medvedenko. Time for srah to do some quick Chekov-research. The character description says: Semyon Semyonovich Medvedenko - Medvedenko is a local schoolteacher who is poor and must support his family at home while later supporting his new family with Masha. Graduation countdown: 43 days

43 days. I have a friend. We would meet in the KC and talk about nothing and everything, back at the beginning of the year when no one had anything better to do than sit in the KC and talk for hours on end. Graduation countdown: 51 days

51 days. When I was a SOAR leader at the beginning of the year, I was pushing all of my baby chicks from Baldwin to the health center. Kevin Kline - 15% :( Mike Myers - 98% Jean Reno - 60% Alan Rickman - 94% Kevin Spacey - 74% Not bad. Too bad JH isn't on the list... [via Skittles?]...

El Patito dressed as a pollito

El Patito dressed as a pollito! This makes me laugh and laugh and roll around on the floor. Sorry, Boyfriend....

I went to Cafe Felix

I went to Cafe Felix with Becky Reik, Harini, and Alex. Patito el Pavito was quiet and normal, which is rather out of character. I suppose I would be, too, meeting up with people who hadn't seen much of each other since high school. You're still very charming....

I went to the craft store

I went to the craft store with my mom and Alex today and Alex kept walking up and down the aisles, sticking his face in the silk flowers. I believe I have The Strangest Boyfriend On Earth....

I watched Apt Pupil

I watched Apt Pupil today with Alex, who is madly and passionately in love with Sir Ian McKellen. I think I may have to fall in love with him myself. This is particularly frightening considering that, in the movie, he plays a former Nazi concentration camp officer who enjoys murdering homeless street hustlers and putting cats in the oven. Of course, this is from the girl who finds Norman Bates attractive. I think I have serious issues and that someone should probably look into Boyfriend's background and make sure he's not a psycho killer....

Sometimes I wish you could peek in someone's ear

Sometimes I wish you could peek in someone's ear while they're sleeping and see what they're dreaming about. Yesterday Alex and I were taking a nap and at one point I was awake while he was asleep. He reached over (in his sleep, mind you) and patted me on the head approvingly and said something unintelligible. I wonder what was going on in there....

All the advantages aside

All the "advantages" aside, I did miss you while you were gone, Alex. So don't feel unappreciated....

Good thing about Boyfriend being in Ohio

Good thing about Boyfriend being in Ohio: free choice of footwear with no worries about being taller than him. Yay boots. Advantage #2: Time alone to be an individual person. Yahboosucks to Alisha. Not to say that it's all fun and games being boyfriendless, but you know what the Monty Python boys say... "'Always look on the bright side of life'?" "No, 'Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.'" 2 hits. I think one of them was me in the Umbrella Office. Sigh sigh lament......

I wonder how much time

I wonder how much time I waste every day. Not that it's really that wasted - I like to relax. I don't like to be stressed. Durned American lifestyle. Yesterday, Alisha as much as told me I don't exist as an individual - I am just Alex's Girlfriend. Well gee, that was nice. Rather painful and frustrating, actually. I love Alex... but I love me, too. I think my English Language test went well. Tests are better than papers....
