Interviewed by The Collective

It's been over a week since The Collective invited readers to be interviewed. I asked for questions then forgot about it for a while, but here - at last - are my answers to their questions. From Jennie!: 1) Why does Ohio insist on throwing more snow at us? Why? From heather! anne!: 2) What is the all-time best Christmas movie? The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. It makes me tear up every time I see Imogene taking her earrings out to look more like Mary, or hear that Leroy left the ham behind for the Baby Jesus. "It's a present....

Musings on bloggings

James had a series of questions that he posed to bloggers, asking us each to send him one "Golden Blogging Tip." Turns out I had way more than one. It would appear that I have a lot of opinions on things and like to express those opinions on the Internet. Who knew?! So I'm reproducing my full response to the request here, because - hey, free content for the lazy one! Feel free to share your own thoughts on blogging, here or in your own blog. When/where do you write the best posts? I don't think there's a formula. If...

My worst cases of blogger's block (blog-clog?) are when I make a rule for myself: "You cannot blog about Y until you have blogged about X." This is stupid. No one cares. And I just end up with a huge pile of post-ideas building up behind whatever it is that seems particularly daunting to me or whatever I'm putting off writing. Anyway, I shall write a series of blog posts this evening about whatever the hell I want in whatever the hell order I want. So let it be written blogged, so let it be done....

Now that you all have your Gravatars¹, here are some other bloggety-things to dabble in, which I have varying levels of enthusiasm for but play with nonetheless: CoComment - A comment-tracking system to follow conversations you've participated in and track your comments across the blogosphere. If you only comment on one or two sites it's probably not worth it, but if you're all over the place (like I am) it might be worth checking out. Rather than leaving a comment on a blog and forgetting about it forever, you can keep track of where you've been and see when other...

Traveling, but not off the couch

As long as I am sitting on my butt on the couch instead of getting up and walking around, I suppose I should tackle one or two of the blog posts I've been planning since last week, but which exist so far only in note-form. Who wants to hear my thoughts about the Oscars? Huh? Who? Note to self: blog this stuff a lot earlier. Each topic deserves its own post, so in this pointless explanatory post, I will just throw in these two little tidbits of travel information that I keep meaning to mention but which aren't involved enough...

Oh, by the way, HAPPY FREAKIN' BLOGIVERSARY TO ME! My blog is now five. Congratulations, blog. Maybe we will send you to kindergarten and you will learn to write yourself so I don't have to. Let's all harken back to that day, five years ago, when this blog exploded, fully-grown and on its horse, from my forehead: The Internet is fostering a disturbing trend of self-promotion. That's all it's really about, anyway. Everyone has their own personal website advertising themselves and their interests (hey, me too). Why? Who actually cares about half the stuff that's on their website? Maybe it's...

Travel blogging... ish

All I seem to blog about these days is TV. That and walking, and occasionally the odd dream or two. That's not unusual, because I don't do much more than work, watch TV, walk and sleep. Occasionally I do laundry. I know, it's really exciting. Well, I'm off for a site visit to three universities in England and Ireland tomorrow. I don't know what kind of adventures and scrapes I'll get into, but I'm sure that it will be more interesting than my life here. In fact, I will probably be so busy that I won't have time to blog...

Blog errors

I keep getting error messages on my blog. I'm hoping this has something to do with the server upgrades they're doing today and not that I broke my blog. Anyway, what seems to work so far is constantly reloading the page until it finally comes up. If you don't see my blog at some point today, wait a few minutes and try again. ... not that you can see this post if you're getting a server error message. Sigh. Update: Allllllllllllllllll better!...

I went out of the country for a week and didn't touch a computer the whole time. Can you believe that? ME. Anyway, I have car repairs to have done, I have to register as a student at The University I Work At in order to take Arabic in the fall (which includes having to get copies of immunization records, which as I type this I realize I didn't send over in the envelope with the rest of my medical forms - doh!), I still haven't unpacked or cleaned since returning, I only just got to see the season finale...

My Get Out Of The Apartment Activity for the day was to go get a cup of tea at a local coffeehouse and finish my book. In getting out of the house, I managed to indulge in a little eavesdropping for once (Humbert doesn't talk much). The girls sitting behind me were graduate students in English but their whole conversation was about blogging. About their blogs, about the blogs they read, about blogs in general, the blogosphere, blog society, blog blog blog blog blog. If you have a blog, you probably know the ear-perking experience of hearing the word "blog"...

As if accounts at Blogger, Xanga, LiveJournal and my real blog weren't enough, BEHOLD!  Here is srah's Yahoo! 360° account! (Yahoo! 360° is Yahoo!'s attempt to make a sort of all-in-one online presence, with blogs, photos, reviews and social networking system all tied together.) First of all, I really don't think it's a good idea to give your Internet product a name with a character that's not on the keyboard. Second, I don't have high hopes for this blog thing (not just for me - I think it's pretty much a given that I'm not going to be using this...

I made a brief appearance last night at my first Meetup™ blog meetup, which happened to be in the same place as SOCHI's happy hour. There were quite a few familiar faces names blogs um... there were quite a few people there who have blogs that I've seen: Suds & Soliloquies (post about the meetup), Mark Maynard, 90% Crud, Vacuum, etc. I'm not sure that I belong to the Ann Arbor School of weblogs. I'm not sure I belong to any school at all. Belonging to a school seems like such a commitment and like you have to share values...

The Fam was sitting around, watching The Simpsons. Mr Burns bought all of the media outlets in town and by the end of the episode, everyone in town was publishing their own newspaper about whatever was on their mind. Me: It's like blogging! Homer Simpson: See Lisa, instead of one big-shot controlling all the media, now there's a thousand freaks xeroxing their worthless opinions. (frowns, family titters)...

Oh Ann Arbor Observer. While I appreciate the publicity, did you really need to out me with my full name? I feel rather violated to be exposed publicly like this, without any warning! I don't mind the ancient, first-semester-related quote, but the recent posts! For god's sake, the recent posts! Did you really need to read my blog on that one particular day? I shudder to think about who is going to come to the site just to read about an ongoing battle with restrictive underwear THAT I DO NOT HAVE (for the record). Fellow bloggers' reactions: Airbeagle, The Bunker,...

No one realizes more than I do that I desperately need to post, if only to move my beautiful Gigli review farther down the page and out of the sight of unsuspecting visitors who might think I actually write like that. Alas, I have writer's block today, and nothing to talk about. So please talk amongst yourselves, or leave me questions or blog-topics or inspiration or haiku. I'll see you when I recover....

Especially ones about diaries that I can apply to my blog. Before break, I read an English translation (yes, I am lazy) of A.O. Barnabooth: His Diary, one of the best-known works of Valéry Larbaud, namesake of my lycée, vichyssois author but perhaps best known as the translator-to-French of many a famous 20th-century anglophone writer - most notably James Joyce and William Faulkner. The book is the diary of an invented character named Archibald Barnabooth, a South American millionaire who has inherited his money from his father and wanders around Europe trying to figure out what one should do with...

I could be that clever Mr Dvorak's perfect blogger! ...Make it clear that you spend the day, week, or month sitting on your rump reading other blogs instead of looking for work... Who does that sound like? That's right. ...comment on links that their authors discovered and cut and paste these links to your blog. If you're trying to jazz up your blog, italicize the text that you cut from the other blog. Add a sentence or two as to why each link is so cool... I'd just like to thank Blogatelle for linking to this article in the first...

ON NE BOUGE PAS PENDANT LE JINGLE. I should have had a blog while I was in France last year. I'm sure I had some interesting observations that should have been recorded for posterity. It probably wouldn't have been as excessively updated as it is here and now. Or maybe it would have been. I did live @ Neptune. I miss Gilles....
