Dream

I had a dream last night where I had just moved into a new apartment across the street from my parents' house. In the dream, I woke up at 7:30 and had to be at work at 8, but friends and family kept coming into my house to slow me down and I felt it was very important to put all of my welcome mats out before I left for work, which took a long time because I had a seemingly endless supply of welcome mats and doors to put them in front of. The owners of the apartment hadn't...

We would have such a very good time/ Such a fine time/ Such a happy time

Hey, my new excuse for why I haven't blogged is: I moved last weekend, so I've been spending a lot of my free time unpacking and cleaning up. I think it's a valiant excuse for not blogging, and I may just use it for the next several months, even after my apartment is unpacked. I have worked my way through the bathroom, the utility closet, the living room and the kitchen, so now I have the bedrooms and the linen closet left to finish. Here are some photos of my progress: My cleaning supplies are all organized instead of being...

Rapid I movement

I've moved! Mme Messana showed up yesterday morning and said, "Can you move today? They want to start on your apartment." I got everything into the apartment next door rather quickly, then sorted it all out and was finished by 2pm. The new room is slightly larger, better-lit, and the shower is not in the kitchen, as previously feared, as they extended the bathroom out into the room and built a wall around it. I don't like to think I've lost an oven, so much as... gained a freezer. I can have ice cream, even if I can't make cookies...

How many landladies does it take to change my oven?

Last night I dreamt that I was at an American football game in Vichy and I called my landlady on my cell phone. The guy in front of me turned around and said, "How do you know Mme Messana?" "She's my landlady," I replied. "Oh. She's my mother," he said. His name was Olivier and we adopted him into our group of English Assistants even though he was French, in his 30s, and prematurely balding. Alex called me in the morning and we were talking when the doorbell rang. It was earlier than expected but I was waiting for a...

Damn you, Immo Vichy (25.9.02)

I finally got to visit an apartment today. This one was through an agency, Immo Vichy. The Immo Vichy woman showed me the apartment, which was a delightful studio (read: kitchen in the bedroom) with construction work going on outside, no closet space, no linens, and no oven, all for the delightful price of 250€, which of course does not include tax or utilities. I told her I'd call her. I got an email from one of the other American assistants in the Vichy agglomeration, telling me her phone number and address and saying she was lonely and had an...
