I placed an order on Amazon.com December 1st. I only waited as long as the 1st because I wanted to make all of my purchases at once, so as to be eligible for the Free Super Saver Shipping. It seemed like a good day, though. It certainly wasn't last-minute, but I wasn't making my Christmas purchases in August, either.
