I'm Spartacus! I'm the king of the world! I am Mrs Nesbitt!

Now that I have finished the AFI Top 100 there are many other projects I could take on, but I've decided to tackle the 10th anniversary version of the list, which came out in 2007. The revised list removed 23 of the films and replaced them with 23 different ones. After deciding on a project, the next step is to determine how much progress I've already made. I'm not quite sure whether I've seen Cabaret,12 Angry Men or Swing Time all the way through, so I will err on the side of caution and rewatch them. I know, however, that...

You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me about my little girl hands?

In talking to a friend about my AFI project, I discovered that not only had I had not done an AFI progress update since 2009, but in the last three years I hadn't even seen all seven of the movies I had left to see. So I decided it was time to do another post AND finally finish the list. 100/100 Raging Bull (#24)Yet another AFI Top 100 movie that I can acknowledge is very WELL-MADE, with lots of symbolism and well-crafted shots, but one I can't really get into myself. I like to have a character who I can...

I'm mad as hell, and we don't need no stinking giant gorillas!

I made a New Year's Resolution to complete the AFI list, but then almost immediately took a break from the AFI to watch as many Oscar movies as possible in February. Then it took me until June to pick it up again, but I've made some decent progress since then! It's strange to think that I'm in the 90s now. What will I do when this project is over? I've been working on it since 2005! 93/100 Network (#66)I went into this movie knowing nothing about it except the "mad as hell" scene and a vague idea that it had...

I'm BLOGGIN' here!

Turns out I made way more progress on the AFI list in January than I'd thought. 88/100 The French Connection (#70)I think this mostly made the AFI Top 100 list because the car chase was influential on later movie car chases. There wasn't much to the movie, other than chasing. I didn't get to know or care about any of the characters, because it was just chase chase chase. I did like the subway scene, though, with Doyle and Charnier trying to chase/lose each other without letting on that they were aware of each other. Jaws (#48)SO SCARY. Good thing...

I think it's more of a spoiler if you tell me, partway through the movie, who Orson Welles plays

AFI progress review time! 84/100 The Godfather, Part II - December 2008On Flixster I said: Poor Fredo. No one should have to die in that hat.Very enjoyable to watch. I like the interweaving of the Vito/Michael stories. and some stranger got mad and was like, "Phew I'm glad I'm reading this AFTER I saw the film!" I didn't say anything about how he died¹, and while Fredo dying is important to Michael's character development, it's not like knowing that he dies is going to ruin the film for you.... did it?Maybe they thought they could use telepathy to communicate?High Noon...

'It's funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen.'

It's been over two years since I went on an American Film Institute Top 100-watching kick, but I thought I would check my progress now, since Alfie did. I'm at 81, if my calculations are correct. I think these are the only AFI Top 100 (1998 list) movies that I've seen since my last update: Lawrence of Arabia - August 2007I had seen Lawrence of Arabia, but I wasn't sure if I'd seen it all in one sitting. Now I have, and on the big screen, too! If you have an opportunity, see it on the big screen. Annie Hall...

'Remember when I killed your brother? I talked JUST LIKE THIIIIIIIIS!'

Another update on my AFI Top 100 progress... #71: The Manchurian Candidate - I figured it would be another one I'd have to suffer through, but... war, romance, Solitaire, politics, brain-washing... this movie has a little something for everyone! It's a must-see, especially for my sister! #72: A Streetcar Named Desire - O, Streetcar! Um, it was pretty good I guess. It was nice to see all the clichés ("I have always depended on the kindness of strangers", "STELLAAAAAAA!") in context. It had interesting, complicated characters, which I usually like, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it's the...

He riddled with Gollum!/ A magic ring he stole!

It's been a really long time since I did an AFI Top 100 update. But it's also been a long time since I watched an AFI movie. I am in a lull, probably mostly due to the fact that American Idol is on EVERY FRIGGIN' DAY OF THE WEEK so I just try to avoid turning the TV on altogether. But since I'm going out of the country, it would be good to get this posted before I go. #67: Wuthering Heights - There was some question in my mind as to whether I would ever be able to complete...

Srah makes some errors, AFI-wise

I have discovered some inconsistencies in my AFI Top 100 list. I had some question as to whether I'd seen Tootsie all the way through before starting this endeavor and that seems to have thrown my count off. Either way, I've seen it all the way through now. I also wasn't sure if I'd seen Dances With Wolves all the way through or if I'd only seen part of it, but let me put it this way: I am not watching Dances With Wolves again. So now that I've gone through the list again and ended up with a different...

Yet another update from the AFI files...

I guess it's been kind of a slow period for my mission to watch all of the AFI's 100 Greatest American Movies, seeing as I went home for more than a week and didn't take any of the DVDs with me. Luckily, apete got one of them for Christmas, so I did actually manage to make some progress. Now I'm back on top of things... and I'm watching The Thorn Birds, which is not in the Top 100 and is about 700,000 hours long. Oh well. But here are the ones I have watched recently: #59: Mutiny on the Bounty...

'Til I saw your City Lights, honey I was blind

Boy, it's getting to be Sarah's Movie Blog around here. But that's because I have no life. Onward and upward! This week, I checked a passel of DVDs out of the library. Once I got them home, however, I was loath to sit down and watch them because I had managed to check out two Charlie Chaplin movies at the same time. This meant that I could allow myself to check out no new movies until I had managed to stomach those two. So I immediately sat down and watched Tootsie, which I've already seen, and It's a Wonderful Life,...

srah's latest project: watch a hellalotta movies

When I moved here, one of the first things I did was to join the local library. The DVD/video section is just across from the circulation desk and is much more compact than the book section, so the first thing I did was to check out DVDs. They have a list of The American Film Institute's 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time posted on the wall, and this (and the fact that apete's already done it) inspired me to take a shot at watching all 100. It's going to involve watching a lot of westerns, gangster films and war...
