For he might have been a Roosian, a French, or Turk, or Proosian, or perhaps Italian

I am 2-0 over the last couple weeks in Guessing Whether Someone is Danish or South African. I don't know why I get those two accents mixed up, except that they both have the combination of very good English spoken with a Germanic-type accent. You would think South African and Dutch would trip me up more often, but they haven't so far. I narrowed the Dane down to either South African or Danish before making my guess a couple of weeks ago and did the same with the South African today. If you extend the game to Guessing Whether Someone...

Drie scheuren in het fudament der Gereformeerde waarheid

I read a Dutch card-catalogue card out loud to my mother, who told me I sounded like I was speaking French. I realized my mistake and changed my Rs from the voiced uvular fricative to flapped ones (language nerd! language nerd!), and felt like I was speaking Spanish. I read Spanish with a French accent, Dutch with a Spanish one, and French with a strange one that no one can identify, but definitely sounds foreign. I strive to be a mutant in all languages....

Ol' Mac Donald had a giraffe, e-i-e-i-ho'

I was speaking English to Andrés at the party when he told me my accent in English made him think of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm". The idea was, I understand, that I am rather nasal with my E-I-E-I-Os in particular. I am never speaking English again. We (heart) murmurs

I always seem to find myself, when people learn that I've studied French and lived in France, discussing whether the French accent is as sexy as it is reputed to be. The assistants have had the same discussion, and can't really come to a clear conclusion. It is certainly true that there is nothing remotely sexy or attractive about being the English assistant and hearing a bored 15-year-old French accent say "At the Christmas, I go to buy the jeu vidéo for my bruzzère." On the other hand, it is always amusing to hear a well-formed sentence, especially from someone...

Orphans is a lovely Scottish film about four adult siblings dealing with the death of their mother. It stars the delectable Douglas Henshall (who you wouldn't know from anything), the dad from Billy Elliot, and Magnus from Rushmore. I don't know why I was thinking about it, as I saw it over a year and a half ago. But one of the most amusing things is that when it was released on video in the US, they subtitled it for people who couldn't handle the accent. Hee hee hee....
