You have about 24 hours left to locate and watch the movie Once before it is no longer "the movie Once" and is instead "the Academy Award-winning film Once." You have been warned! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mIpwx5lA5I It's such a sweet, lovely movie and I would love for everyone to see it. It manages to be romantic without being Romantic - that is, it's a wonderful story about the relationship between two people, but it's also very realistic. It felt very real - possibly influenced by the fact that the leading actor and actress fell in love during the making of the movie....

It's a good thing that I went to Kroger in my pyjamas that one time, because otherwise I think this would have turned entirely into a pop culture and movie-reviewing blog. Don't expect that to end anytime soon. My movie-viewings are usually more exciting than my real life. And so, with no further ado, I bring you... Juno! I am really glad to be able to say that I've seen Juno. It makes me feel like that much more of a legitimate moviegoer, since my Oscar-nominee-viewing was - pre-Juno - at three, and none of those had been nominated for...

So... how 'bout them Oscars, huh? About a week before the Oscars (which was weeks and weeks and weeks ago) I saw The Departed, which brought my grand total of Oscar-nominated Movies Seen from three to four. That's an increase of... something percent!¹ It actually improved my viewing a lot more than that, because the other ones I'd seen were Little Miss Sunshine, The Devil Wears Prada (nominated for Best Actress and Costume Design) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (nominated for several miscellaneous crew awards). So I went from seeing one of the Best Picture nominees to...

The only Academy Award that I cared about this year was won by the person I wanted to win it. Ford's in his flivver, etcetera etcetera. [ETA] I don't really get the "Best Song" category though. Is it for the song that's the stand-alone best or the song that supports its movie in the best way or what? I didn't see Hustle and Flow, so maybe the song worked well in the movie, but now that I've had it in my head all day today, I have to say that I'm not all that impressed with the incessant repetition of...

Moulin Rouge

I finally got around to seeing the thrilling, award-winning film Moulin Rouge this weekend. Huh. It was entertaining, but I don't quite see why it seems to be everyone in the world's favorite movie at the moment. It was funny and it was different, but it was lacking in many ways. It didn't really pick up at all until the "Like a Virgin" sequence and by then, almost all of the music was over. It was like: First half: Many musical sequences that have nothing to do with each other or what's going on onscreen. I thought it was really...

Yes, Gwyneth was awful. The dress was awful and made her boobies look droopy and wrinkly. And her eye makeup was scary. Barbra Streisand's dress was bad too. Did you see that one makeup guy or whatever he was in the fringy tuxedo? Hmmmm. Halle Berry's hysterical tears made me cry too. I'm such a pushover. Ian McKellen's boyfriend is VERY VERY YOUNG! There is still a chance for Alex. He was practicing what he would say when Sir Ian called him. (It was not "Sorry, I have a girlfriend." I have hidden his body somewhere the cops will never...

The nominees are online! My picks: Tom Wilkinson (even though he thinks I'm a dork), Ian McKellen, Monsters, Inc. (if you look at the two other nominees, I think you can see why I chose that...), Amélie Amélie Amélie and when Amélie's not nominated, Fellowship of the Ring. Amélie may have gotten the shaft at the stinking Golden Globes, but she's coming back for revenge in the Oscars. Watch out!...

What a sad sad slow year this has been for movies. Echhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I hope Amélie gets nominated for the Best Picture Oscar....
