Dreams
I kept dreaming and waking up last night, so - although there are portions of these dreams that are unrelated - I've divided them into three parts. Parte the First I was riding a bus with Adrian Monk¹. I was also a TV detective or mystery-solver of some sort with my own show, maybe sort of like the one on Medium. I looked like Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica though. Somehow - whether through a Groundhog Day thing or because we both had psychic powers - Monk and I both knew that he was about to get shot by a...

Guten Abend, Englander scum, ein ZWEI! (Donnerstag, a little late)
My grandmother grew up in Germany. In college, my mother studied abroad in Central Europe one summer and visited Germany and Austria. I took four and a half weeks of German in middle school. Last year my parents had a delightful German exchange student living with them. Although I never really studied it, German was always sprinkled into language around the house. And yet ich kann nicht sprechen Deutsch.. I have picked up phrases and words here and there - not enough to actually communicate in the language, not enough to use without embarrassment in front of actual German-speaking people,...

Today all my dreams will come true
I dreamt last night that I was in a Catholic church, dressed in a frumpy dress and a choir robe, and everyone was expecting me to help with Communion. I don't know why, because I'm not even eligible to take Communion in a Catholic church. I complained loudly about this but no one cared. Someone asked me if I was a novitiate¹, which offended me no end. I shouted, "No! I don't know why I'm dressed like this!" Then later they made me hand snacks out to the old people and children in the congregation. These horrible kids took all...

Chocolate Rain!
I don't normally like to post about products in my blog because it feels like I'm selling something. But I want everyone to know what delicious chocolate things I am enjoying right now! Wheeee! I feel like Mindy Kaling. No Sugar Added Fudgsicles are theeeeeeee greatest thing ever. I can't stop eating them, which is okay because they only have 10g of carbohydrates (2g of sugar). Wheeee! Guilt-free sweets! They are artificially sweetened, but don't taste like artificial sweetener. This is good because I hate artificial sweeteners. The only side effect that I've found so far is that they cause...

I'd just as soon watch a wookiee
I am so conflicted. On one hand, I am really excited that the creator of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and the Indiana Jones movies is going to be the Grand Marshal of the Rose Bowl parade this year. On the other hand, I am really disappointed that the creator of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Smeaaaaaaghth, Revenge of the Sith, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor and Howard the Duck is going to be the Grand Marshal of the Rose Bowl parade this year. Hmmmm... Alright, now I am finally upset about being...

Dream
I dreamt last night that instead of living miles from Ohio's border with Indiana, I lived miles from Ohio's border with Italy. My family took a wrong turn and ended up in Ravenna, Italy, so we checked out a gift shop, which was owned by an old Amish lady. My grandma turned out to be chillin' in the café there. I looked over the things for sale in the gift shop, like "Greatest Hits of Ireland" and "Greatest Hits of Spain" CDs, but I didn't have any Euros. Then we went out to watch the harness races. I have never...

A sign that I am getting less and less cool in my old age
I spent most of my early life listening to Oldies music. In order to prepare my track list for smg's CD swap, I went and got out my old mix tapes from high school and scouted out which tracks I also had in CD or mp3 form. A mix from 1994 includes "Turn, Turn, Turn" by The Byrds, "Bobby's Girl" by Marcy Blaine, "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" by Cher, "Downtown" by Petula Clark, "Oh Sweet Pea" by Tommy Roe and "Walk Away Renee" by the Left Banke as well as a smattering of showtunes and some more contemporary songs. I...

Dream
I had a dream last night where I was on a car trip with Cheryl, Robin and Harini and we stopped to get ice cream at this roadside stand. I went to the bathroom, but it had a big window into the stall, which looked right out onto the ice cream line. So people could see in! My grandma was there too and she was making fun of me. Then I was back in Vichy and ran into two of my hôtellerie students, who were now selling electronics. I was disappointed that they hadn't gone very far in hôtellerie but...

Flushing: Home of giant goldfish. Or something.
After work, I came home and collapsed. The snow had started and I didn't feel like doing anything. Well, I felt like shopping (I almost always feel like shopping these days) but I couldn't get ahold of Mr B******. So Rachel and I lazed around until MaTT got back and then the three of us lazed around until it was time to eat dinner. We picked a likely candidate out of the AAA guide and set off through the blinding snow. Well, maybe not blinding but it blew around a lot. The place we'd found turned out to be more...

Family hijinks!
We're doing the usual Memorial Day Family Cemetary Tour. Alfie: (points out a statue of a lamb on a baby's grave) That doesn't look like a lamb! It looks like a Westie with plants sticking out of its butt. Srahgrandma: It looks like a bear to me. Srahdad: Looks like a wolf to me. Srah: (being facetious) Looks like a sea anenome to me! (points at Alfie) Hey, I sea anenome! Alfie: (grumbles) No one likes you. Srah: I do! Alfie: You don't count. Srah: One, two, five, eleven... Srahgrandma: You went from five to eleven. Srah: I also skipped...

Who's a widdle waptopkins?
I have been trying very hard not to be the New Parent who thinks that their baby is the most amazing thing in the world and has to tell you about everything that it does as if it were something special, when you know very well that millions of other babies can do the same thing. I think this is why I haven't been blogging regularly - I've been playing with Isidore and reveling in all of the amazing things I can do and the amazing places I can compute from but trying not to blog about all of them....

Of all the Greek and Roman grandmas, Cupid, the god of chicken is certainly the best known.
As you may remember reading, we played MadLibs in the car on the way to and from DC. My carmates have asked that I record some of them for posterity, but as most of the things involving our SI professors (whose names have been abbreviated to avoid Googlings) will not interest you, the results are all in the extension. Read on if you dare!...

'I make it a rule always to park on beef jerky' [Day 8 of the DC trip]
Amanda and I woke up early today so that we could see the White House before we left. I had seen it from Constitution Avenue, but hadn't gotten up to the gates. So around 8am, we set off down the street a bit and got a look. We couldn't see many snipers and guards and SS men, so we decided that either they were hiding or they were betting that no anarchists and terrorists would be up and about at 8am on a Saturday. On the gate, there was a button that said "Welcome to the White House". It didn't...

The Man wants to screw homosexuals out of a verb*. Heterosexuals can "marry" or "get married". Now they're talking about offering homosexuals the possibility of "civil unions," so as not to cheapen the sacred vows of marriage. So what do they do? Do they get civil unionized? That sounds like they're miners or auto workers. Civilly united? That sounds like two people who can barely stand each other being sewn together (which is almost as good an image as terrible p0rn!). Sucks to be you, gay people. You are second-class citizens, so no verbs for you! I had always assumed...

Mr B------ was in the kitchen and I called to him from the living room. "When you come back, will you bring the caramel corn?" "What about a horn?" "Caramel CORN. Will you bring the caramel corn?" "Terrible whore?" "What? Terrible p0rn? No, I said CARAMEL CORN!!!!1" He finally understood what I'd been saying and tossed me the bag. Eventually I recovered from the mental image of terrible p0rn, with people completely dressed and glaring at each other from across the room, but he only started my hysterical laughter again when he added, "You know, my great-grandmother made that caramel...

Dream
I was on a road trip with my family, including my grandma. We got lost and were travelling down this dirt road, which turned out to be a dead end. We turned into this driveway to turn around, where there was a sign that said "Beware of Brownies". My family was speculating about whether this referred to the chocolate kind of brownies or the magical kind in Willow when this cow came rushing at us. Apparently "brownies" was slang for "cows" wherever we were, because this cow started chasing us. My dad put the pedal to the metal and just...

The Friday Five
Need content. Am tired and depressed lately and have blogtopics but not the will to blog. Encourage me? In the meantime, it's memetime. 1. List your five favorite beverages. Tea with milk and sugar, chai tea, bubble tea, peach iced tea and apricot juice. 2. List your five favorite websites. SI webmail (when it works), IMDb, Technorati, The Onion and... uh... srah blah blah. 3. List your five favorite snack foods. Junior Mints, my grandma's Nuts and Bolts (basically like Chex Mix), chips and salsa, gingersnaps and cheese. 4. List your five favorite board and/or card games. Trivial Pursuit, Rummikub,...

Dream
I was watching TV with my grandma and the rest of my family (I don't remember why, but it was significant that my grandma was there) and flipping uncontrollably through channels. Something about Jamaicans came up - a TV show or a reference or something. Then I was at Meijer with my sister and my high school nemesis and her mom. We were buying peas, but I was carrying everything in my arms for some reason and as we neared the checkout, I started dropping everything. I dropped two cans of peas and they broke, so I had to go...
